G'day,
Going to Maui in July for a week and would like to get in touch with somebody who has windsurfed there. Can anyone who has been there recommend accommo and/or windsurf hire? Possibly even some kind of combo, ie windsurf/car/accommo or similar? What are the best spots on the north shore for flatwater and small waves?
Cheers
Felix

Felix,

Was there in 1992, so it was a long time ago, fantastic place, you can take the package route which is a little more expensive, but less hassle, freesail has something on that, and adverts.

If you want to do it by yourself, you can do it cheaper, if you don't get a posting that helps here, I'll put you onto my mate in Melb who goes every year and has been for the last 12 years so he'll know the best way

I'll follow this post and see what responses you get!!

If you can afford it, my advice would be to hire everything in maui. this way you get to try the lastest equipment and can change according to conditions, but best of all no transport problems with bags of kit(customs and security now is a pain in the ass). The maui shops all do packages with great places to stay. One of the shops had more hire equipment than most of the Perths shops have stock.

The guys at Al Wests Maui van rentals (800 870 4084)were great to me as I had no accomadation organised when I landed in maui, so they helped me out. They have great vans and small cars that hold heaps of people and kit. The Banana Bungalows is a great cheap place to stay.

The best place to sail is Kanaha Bay which has small waves on the outside and can be big with a large swell. It is like a bigger Coronations and Lancelin mixed with Dutchies. The best bit is the amazing grassed and shaded rigging area which stretches for hundreds of metres. Get there early for a parking space.

If you are travelling alone but want to hang out with a group, the east coast shops do goup tours which makes the trip cheaper.
Staying on the north shore is cheaper than the west tourist side, but you will have to book now to get a good place.

My advice is to email the maui shops or buy an Ameriacan Windsurfing mag for all the contacts.
You will love Maui, cause the wind is constant and the water warm.

Yeah Maui is bloody awesome. Constantantly windy from 11-5.
The only downer is the number of people on the water. The place needs traffic lights.
I went across with a east coast shop in 97.
You can do it yourself a lot cheaper. The rental shops ave the latest gear so dont even think of taking your own. Just take your harness and lines.
Enjoy you are bound to have a ball.

just got back from my third trip there in 12 months. Kanaha is so huge that crowds are not an issue. The people are great, from all over the globe. Try Sprecklesville for some variety of scenery, or Kihei, especially late on marginal or NNE days. These spots are all very user-friendly. I've rented from Maui Windsurf Co every time, they rent mostly F2 boards, North and Arrows sails. Check airline baggage fees before you schelp any stuff from home.

Also, you'll want to start monitoring http://www.mauiwindsurfcompany.com/windcam.cfm
every day until you go, then for a few weeks after you return, just to come back down. Wish I was there, um, right now, actually, to be, uh, perfectly honest, driving northbound past those smokestacks. Christ.

went for 2 weeks in April. Get a package deal from a shop. I did an exhustive comparison but found them all to be the same price. It depends on what boards and sails you like. I went through Hawaiin Island but next time would use Hi Tech because they seem to carry more rental gear including RRD boards. For a car go to Word of Mouth - very cheap an unobtrusive. You can internet book and ring them from the airport. I stayed at Francisco Goya's mother's place. It was the cheapest on the North Shore - about 10 min from hookipa. Hookipa is farly easy to sail when the swell is small.
Let me know f you want exact questions answered
