How do you go fast when not fully powered? I often get passed when I'm not well powered. I was pacing with a guy the other week and he left me behind in the lulls, yet when I got powered I managed to make up quite a gap and get past him. So what's the secret to being efficient when not fully powered?

Hi Andrew, sounds like the Sputnik is working for you?

Depends on the point of sail, upwind/downwind come more onto beam reach to get some more power back into sail.

How fast 25-30 knots, even less on race courses- i've been averaging down around 21-23knots yet still going better than most sometimes (light wind).

First thing to do is point toes, get weight back onto balls of feet to trim board flat and also try to stop sail from oversheeting. Then keep everything still.

#1 rule is: don't oversheet in lulls...

Also try to surf down the face of swell. You want to stay planing at all costs, so in a lull get onto the face of some swell, and slowly bear away so you stay planing. When a gust hits, get up to full speed, then push against the fin so you shoot upwind. The higher you are upwind, the more you can bear away in a lull...

Or maybe it's just a case of you simply having a smaller board than your mates?
