Yep Im conna piss someone off but............

Whats going on with some of your comrades? Theres an unwritten rule that there is a windsurfing spot, and downwind a kitesurfing spot enough room for everyone.
Why then is there 5 or 6 windsurfers setting up and going out right in the middle of the kitesurfing area?
We share a love of sea and wind but both craft are not compatible in 1 small area. In good winds you guys can go faster than a kitesurfer and we can go upwind 10-15% higher. Masts and lines dont mix.
Last year I got abused by a dickhead who was on a broad reach and went just downwind of me as I was jumping.I looked downwind of myself as this guy flew into the zone. (kitesurf rule: dont sit directly downwind of another kitesurfer).
Many locals have KINDLY asked why windsurf in a kitesurf area and have been told to get stuffed.
Lets not start an us against them attitude but WTF.
Im happy to kitesurf on the flatter water in the windsurf area but all hell would break loose.
Its up to everyone in this water based community to give advice and be safe

Be careful dave...... i love going to the butter flat super shallow area that is the windsurfing bit and sharing.

Maybe they went downwind cause the tide was so low and had no choice?

Its all there for everyone. Just need to take care and keep a look out.

As a converted kiter (yes i STILL windsurf) cant argee more dave. Tho i hardly ever go to melville to kite or windsurf i understand where you are coming from. At dutchies some guy came right into the kiting area and just jybed right in front of me!!!!. There will always be agro between the two but seriously guys, lets keep it to a minimum and think about what you are doing. When i do kitesurf im always looking around for windsurfers making sure im not getting in the way, why dont windsurfers do the same???
We are blessed with wind and water here, lets not f*&k it for everyone.

How well is it marked???

Any windsurfer that intrudes in a kite surfing area is asking for trouble!!!
I'm one of the windsurfers that think the 2 should be seperated where possible, sometimes it's hard enough to figure out what another windsurfer is going to do, with out having to worry about kites as well.

If it's in waves and there's only one break it gets harder to divide the area fairly, then you just all have to be real carefull.
But where there's defined areas it's in everybody's interests to stick to them.

So what is with some KITERS who are not using the waves, just doing what they would do anywhere else, staying right in the break with the windsurfers?
I mean where you have an ideal wave break and 30 ppl are taking turns to ride of jump nice waves. Then a guy who is just kite cruising back and forth, boosting of shoulder hi chop decides to move in where the windsurfers are... but he is not using the waves. He could do that sh!t anywhere else 100m either side. Then next week another one, then another one, suddenly it is heaps.

Kiters who are in control, understand right of way and USE tha bloody wave are welcome at good wave spots BTW

hey dave. Some windsurfers have always launched someway downwind of the carpark and some prefer not to use the carpark at all. This has been the case for many years before kites came along. I don't think any rule has somehow happend but we generally keep to our own areas.

No Dave I'm not peeved
I've sailed there for 15 years+ on and off and never had a problem. Officially there are no defined areas. Although there have been a few heated incidents commonsense and good spirit has prevailed.
It's the same deal at Woodies nothing official just goodwill.
Self regulation is our best bet
Let's keep it that way.

Dave.... oops sorry, I was probably one of those dumb pricks who ended up down there when at Melville. Packed up as soon as soon as I got into the kite area, and went home. Bit like some of the kite crew, still learning.
Started up at car park, ended up at kites. You get that when you haven’t all the skills yet A.

In the past couple of years have not seen any issues at Melville. The two zones are respected and those that inadvertantly setup in the wrong spot are advised politely of the correct spot for them.

I have seen a few of both teams passing through each others zones to go somewhere, but they don't hang around. Some of the learners windsurfers get blown down that way, but they are usually near the beach and get off and walk back after a while.

On a norwester it is a little different, 'cause both teams are hooning along the shore, and to get a decent run need to cross over into each others patch. There is a lot more room for all with this direction though, so there is usually no conflict.

I was also unlucky enough to end up down the kite end on Saturday.
I was out the back on a small board and when the wind dropped off I ended up downwind with no power to get back to the carpark.
I was walking back upwind in the shallows when a couple of kiters were trying to take off, Instead of waiting untill I passed they were walking backwards with me and getting frustrated that I was still in their way, not hard to figure out that I was trying to get out of their way, staying downwind would be in their line of launch and I also prefer to be upwind of kites. One guy did a good face plant right in front of me, obviously my fault and started yelling at me, luckily I'm a bit deaf and took no notice.
It is only when the conditions are not perfect that we have to share a bit of space so get over it and practice your launches.

I remember when i was learning to windsurf I used to sail there, I regularily ended up down in the kiters section because I was too gumby to be able to stay upwind. Some times u cant help but end up down wind if its average conditions, and its the last thing I want

i spent the whole of sunday windsurfing in between 500,000,000 kiters at pinaroo, we all got on like a house on fire..not quite... there were a few grumpy faces.....who dropped one hand off the bar to let me know!!!... (G.R.).!.!..!..!.....................

but if you have to go downwind of kite, give them extra extra room otherwise you could wave goodbye to all the stitching in your luff. or 90kgs of cool dude landing on yer bonce...doh

I was sitting with my daughter at Scarborough beach last weekend. Kites were spread from Brighton beach up to the northern car park at Scarborough. I counted approx 25 up at any one time. About 5 crew on sailboards. All seemed ok when viewing from afar.

What made me laugh was the tool with the practice kite on the beach at Northern car park at Scabs. Excuse me, but isn't a bit dangerous, learning to fly a kite, that is lifting you off the ground, when you don't have any control, in a public area, with families about?

I sat from afar waiting for this tool to loose control and collect someone. Sure enough, Mr Kite-Tool lost control, and off down the beach travels Mr Kite, with Mr Tool lying on is arse 100m away. Fortunately no one was hurt.

One day a kiter will hurt an unsuspecting member of the public, and guess what, the law suit will be on. The winners will be the lawyers; the losers will be idiots like the tool mentioned above, as well as the kite community.

Segregated areas are a natural evolution that is practical and efficient. Latitude is required to make them work, fortunately this happens majority of the time.

Unfortunately the best intentions of both communities will be affected by idiots like Mr Kite-Tool. How do you think a local government will act, when they are dragged in front of the Beak, having to explain why they didn't protect the public on their "patch"? Prohibition in public areas comes to mind.

Don't put authorities in a position of having to police a sport as a result of having their arses sued off. Try and stick to segregated areas, and most importantly, take responsibility for your own actions, whatever circumstances you find yourself.

Trying to make segregated areas work will be in the interest for all. Both water users public.

You're right, biggrin, the kites kept to their section and us windsurfers kept to ours. Nobody was getting in anybody's way. A bit of common sense goes a long way.

However, seeing the kites stretching as far as one could see had me wondering how much bigger that sport can grow before the **** hits the fan!

hasnt that already happened in cott. The prohibited bit. Which is why they are all going from that carpark north of dutch in. I heard that was the only place they are allowed in cottlesloe. Though I may be wrong... hearsay and all
