Hi There

Looking at getting one of these vans around 1990+
Does any one use these as a Windsurfing van ??
If are you able to rack the boards and masts along the length of the load space ?? or do you have to pile it in diagonally accroos the bay?

Reason being I want to create a bed in the van and rack the gear under the bed.

And any thing to look out for with these would be graet

Cheers

Paddy

They can fall over...

Caught up with a friend at Double Island Point one day who was driving his newly aquired L300 4x4 Van. He was telling all who would listen, "This is the best car I have ever bought, it goes anywhere and carries everything!"

Later that day his van was on it's side...

Drive safely

Paddy,
I have a 92 model and have had it over 10 years.
I have board racks in the roof area because they are short wheel base and the boards have to sit above your head.
Will take about 290cm boards up top and another layer below that where I carry shorter boards, say 250cm.
I can carry up to 460cm 2 piece masts down the side of the van but at seat level.
I carry 3 - 4 boards, 4 masts, 6 sails and 2 boxes of bits and pieces all the time, it's only when you travel that space is a bit tight.
Sails lay directly on the floor and can accomodate up to 7.8M in length.
If you put in a false floor you could carry bigger sails and push them right up to the back of the seats.
Most have trouble with the exhaust manifold cracking but fitting extractors solves that problem.
Very reliable but a bit bouncy when empty.
Great overall van for windsurfing.
Never looked like tipping it over, even in the rugged high country in Victoria, crossed rivers and went just about anywhere I went with my short wheel base Maverick with a diff lock.
Never had it in deep soft sand as I stick to the hard stuff only, too slack to dig vehicles out of bogs.

Cheers
Paul

The Racking is made from aluminium tubing, the same material as we use for our 32mm boom arms, heat treated anodised and gripped the same as a boom.

Have a 94 4x4 model.

I have bench style boxes down each side up to the level of the engine. On the door side, it stops just where the door is. It then fits about a 260 in with no hassles. Fits all the sails in between the boxes.

All the best.

Great van, I even went through the trouble of replacing the engine at 300,000 kms, due to worn oil rings( Mits apparently have fairly soft ones, but over 300,000 is very common. Same as above with extactors. Not much fits below the engine cover height, a platform that sits over the wheel wells for bed and sail/short stuff under. I leave my board on racks overhead and it just sticks out between the front seats. It's pretty much a commercial vehicle, cruises easy at 120 on highway, but can be a bit rough on dirt roads, an extra tank is a big plus also, bit thirtsy when loaded up

Paddy, I have a teabagger mate who's had one for years and he loves the bus! Vans are definately the go for windsurfing, and the 4WD is a big bonus!!!

Hey Paul, is this boom tube racking available to the public?????
Have a new "company car", 1986 Hiace LWB, and I could use two F or E shape racks to keep 2 or 3 boards on the driver's side wall.
Seaton.
