When i got my second hand jp freewave board, it came with a 32cm fin with sweep back but it had been badly destroyed and i beleive the tip looked reglassed. I have since got a goldwing but i want to try and modify this fin so i can use it for wave, freestyle, bump and jump with winter coming up. I have nothing to lose playing around with it. I was wondering if it was suitable to cut back and make a short fin by about 5cm and sand and reshape the fin to a suitable size to try a bit of freestyle. Has anyone tried this or is it a waste of time?
The fins that used to come with freestyle boards were just smallish freeride fins. Most freestylers used to cut them down or use cut down versions of wave or freeride fins. They work well for freestyle, passable for flat water sailing but they are useless in waves. That said I'm talking about 20 cm fins and shorter. You'd get a lot better all round performance from your proposed 27 cm fin.
There's no great secret to reshaping a fin. The freestylers are looking for max lift from the shortest possible fin so they don't concern themselves too much with flattening the tip to minimise drag. However with a 27 I'd be inclined to thin it down towards the tip.
You're not really a freestyler until you make your own fins. This fin was cut down to 19 cm, not by me, accidently left behind in my garage. A proven performer, it's seen a lot of use.
Does anyone know wtf is in this fin. It is possibly the wierdest thing i would expect. it follows no pattern or such but rather an offcut. lol I have edited the pic a tad to show the interior more easily. It has me thinking....if i cut more off that fin the weird interior bar will be very close to the front.

this is old news (ive posted it a few times)what makes tis fin a classic is the blob of glue on the trailing edge hasnt cured,

That is possibly the ugliest look fin possible i have seen. im guessing id doesn't work 2 well?
