I put a photo of a fin I.D. of an Australian product. I have had this fin for almost two decades, and it has served me well. Are they still making fins in your country? Can someone tell me about the information on the fin? Recently I optained a more modern fin in a similar size. The shape is similar as well although modernized and slightly longer. I bought it to use with another board, but find that it fits this one. What do you think about the changes in fin design over 15 or more years?

ok serious now.

joe, those fins were made in byron bay, new south wales by the gudgeon brothers who made seriously good replica fins for the time.

hand moulded and true to original specs, good early nineties stuff.

they moulded fins from around the world until the chinese got in on the act and they turned their moulds to household items

regards ian

Thanks for the serious replies. How about the poly vynl ester? All the fins I see these days are made out of something rather different. Then there's the Larry Tuttle attribution. You're saying that they were built as knock-offs from his shape, right? Personally the fin has served me well. However, I'm wondering if a newer swept back Rainbow Charger made of G-10 with a sleeker foil and trailing edge might be noticeable when I put it on the same early 90's generation board. By the way the fin was bought in a shop in Cambridge, Ma. back then. The shop is defunct except for a web address that isn't up to date. I met a representative Australian there once. You have to respect someone who has travelled all that distance to sell you something.

I used quite a lot of those Finworks fins in the '90's. They were mostly very well made and great shapes at a quite reasonable price. I still have a few favourites that I sometimes use. They were made under licence for Larry Tuttle AFAIK and were exported to the USA and other places. The same company also did fins from Curtis, Jimmy Lewis and HT Hawaii. It left a real hole in the market here when they pulled out and sold their molds and methods to an Asian company.

Vinylester resin is closer to epoxy in some its properties than Polyester resin but easier to work with like polyester and much lower cost than epoxies.

Is it stiffer than the G-10 epoxy? I remember buying this Fin Works for a reduced price. Since I own both fins I've described, my questions are a bit academic. I haven't sailed with both fins enough to actually remember a difference. Since I do own more modern boards, I will be sailing less with this board and don't expect to actually optain any real experience with changing the fins. However, pre-season I spent a good deal of time finely tuning them both. You do seem to verify that it was time well spent as they are good product. If it doesn't serve me, I expect it will serve someone else.

Seeing as though you feel the need to message me personally, and abuse me, because I questioned you in a public forum. You were annoyed and said that you were just asking valid questions. OK lets do this in public. Brucie, what the hell is the above? A question? No. An opinion? No. Useless drivel? Yes!!! Bingo, we have a winner.

You tuned your boards and fins in the "preseason". What did you do, gym time and run a few laps with them? Give it a rest!
Then your first original question was : Basically... you bought a fin. It looked almost the same as an old one but "modernised" (whatever that is). You are somewhat suprised that it also fits the old board WOW well bvgger me, what a revelation!!!! Then you ask us what we all think of changes in fin design over the last 15 years.
Is it at all suprising that when the above is posted by somebody who has about 30 pseudonyms (look that one up in the dictionary) ... half of Australia tells you to p!ss off

Oh, yeah, the other part..... You bought a fin in a shop in Massachusetts and now the shop is no longer open. An Australian once visited that shop. Rivetting Brucie. Keep it up.
