Some friends are going to Myall Lakes this weekend and I thought I might take my 125 Tabou Rocket up & try & get a sail.
They are staying at Neranie Sands right at the northern end of the lake up near Seal Rocks. Anyone know of it and what it's like to sail? How shallow , feasable in a NE , do I need a weed fin?
The other option might be to go up to Booti Booti , Wallis Lakes area and sail there and then go back to camp with the others.
Any local info appreciated.

Dont know much about the first area you mentioned but Wallis lake is a top spot.
You can launch from Tiona Park or go a bit further up and sail from the sailing club.
In a nor-easter you have to slog out a bit to get the full force of the wind but then its sweet. Super long runs in clear water and is around chest deep for a long way. Works in most wind except east. Huge sandbar between club and Tiona park and Booti Booti.
Lots of grass to rig on and showers/toilets etc at the sailing club.
Watch out for the big goanna's wandering the car park

sue,
not too sure about the northern end of myall but don't discount smith's lake especially in a NE. NE can be good at Wallis although you may need a weed fin.

always take a surfboard as that area can get superb waves.

check out winda woppa otw up if it's NE.

When I was there I launched from the sailing club just north of Tiona Park. (Paradise on earth) As I recall it was very shallow for quite a long way out (as is Tiona) and a bit of a walk was required to get into fin safe territory. On the other side it was quite rocky close to shore so gybe before you get too close.
Take your biggest sail.

So for someone unfamiliar to the area do i have to worry about shallows out in the middle?
The only thing that worries me is last time I sailed there I had a much bigger heavier board to get planing earlier but stay on the water better. I know it gets very choppy for the amount of wind.. Don't want a replay of yesterday with buggerall wind + big chop..
So no one been to Neranie Sands?

Ended up going up there. The place we stayed on Myall lakes was at the top end just near Seal Rocks. It was blowing a gusty S that came and went with rain.I was stuffed after 3 days sailing so had a snooze and by the time I went out I'd missed some good stuff.
Bit of a pain working up to clear the point so I was out of the bay but wow once I got a squall and out into the centre the runs were kms long , water clear and unpolluted , all bush and no sharks.... Blast! I could see the rain was going to end so turned around as sure enough the wind ran out and I was stranded standing on the point for a while until it came in a bit.
Wind came in later in the day c 18kts in gusts but I had sailed for 2hrs by then so didn't stay out long.Terrific place once your out in the open and I'd say great for jumps if the wind came in as it had some good ramps in 15 - 18kts.Someone suggested I launch around the corner at the boat ramp and next time I will as you're straight out into the wide open lake.
Went and had a look at the Wallis Lake sailing club spot and looks like it would be fantastic in the right wind. Really long runs..Would have been great in the S I had the day before. No wind then though so came home.

You are right, sailing from the club there is awesome from S through to NW, anything with west in it is best, tends to be more reliable despite the big mountain to the west,. The lake is several klms wide from east to west, so by the time the westerly hits the middle of the lake it is pretty consistent. I usually get down there in winter a fair bit. There are no shallow banks to watch, just the odd floater for a crab pot, it is just pretty shallow in close so you need to walk out a bit to launch if you have a monster fin, but it is still not very deep all the way across (some parts being 4-8ft deep in parts). On the shore it is sandy, in the middle it is sand with a bit of compacted mud. Always take a weeder, as the ribbon weed can get frustrating otherwise. On a sunny day it almost looks like you are sailing in fiji especially when not sailing too far from the launch spot as the water is clear and the sand turns it a tropical blue colour

Never sailed the lakes on a NE, too busy sailing locally when NE

It's 1.5hrs from my place too, but worth while in winter for the long runs and clear water. Will PM you my mobile so we can hook up for a sail in the first big winter westerly
