Just got in from a good fast session in our local harbour. Good 20kt wind, plenty of chop. Now, I have some NP equip. and have never had a gripe until today and still will continue to use NP. Whilst bouncing around at full plane in harness and straps I managed to bounce my harness hook out of the harness and into the small harness line adjustment handle (???) as this threw all my balance out and be stuffed if I could get unhooked, it ended up with a very nasty full-speed catapult and was stuck under the sail for a few seconds, not a nice feeling after the impact emptied my lungs. Just wondering if this is a common occurance or am I just as lucky as I am skilled???

Sounds like a freak event, would be quite freaky to have it happen.

I have had my harness hook go over the boom and hook onto the boom, don't ask me how the hell I managed it, I don't know, but it ended with me doing a face plant into the sail.

Glad to hear you are ok.

so how could this be a fault of the sail?i agree with elmo that it was just a freak event.maybe cut the loop on the harness line adjustment handle and put a not on it to pull, save the fear of hooking into it again

Ggf, NP harness lines, not sail. You're right though, I set the lines to length when I first got them, and as far as I can see, I don't think I'll be adjusting them again, even if I do, I should be able to without needing a finger pull.

Comrade Sailhack
If you not for changing adjustment of lines anymore do for yourself big favour and go buy set of fixed lines at same length you have now been setting yours to and keeping of adjustable set as spare.
I not see how this is fault of manufacturer for you placing of hook where it not be going ?
I like Elmo have manage place harness hook over entire boom... I take big wipeout and stuck under sail trying to removing of harness hook from boom... just like when you stuck in harness line under water you must be of pushing towards boom/sail before trying of the disengage.
I not of blame for my equipment... I blame poor technique and big stupidity/carelessness
Good luck and keep at it for certain yar

I did something simuilar. No idea how it happend but yesterday when i was sailing i got a small catepult at not to much speed. And i managed to get my up haul line tangled and knotted around my harness hook. I was trying to un tie it quickly and probably made it worse.

Never the less it was still quite an odd feeling and very frustrating.

Comrade Kremlin,

When you adjust your boom height for high/low winds, do you keep your lines the same length? Or use a different set of lines?

Wineman, no sarcasm taken, the sarcasm was on my behalf, and as you said, we all elmo, and I am very happy with my first official seabreeze elmo recognition. It'll, no doubt, not be my last elmo.

Comrade Sailhack
Lines stay same length... very rare I adjusting of the boom height for particular sail... if wind light = get bigger sail. If wind strong = rig smaller sail.
I mainly sailing in waves so not a big issue... maybe this is something more for doing in blasting/flat water ? I not sure of this so i asking of the question not for tryiong of making joke

I have same boom and lines for 4.4/4.7/5.4/6.2
Sometimes I move lines along boom for different sail sizes (big difference from 4.4 to 6.2) but once i set boom height before entering of water i not change by more than 1 - 2cm.
I also quite tall 193cm but have boom rather low - this making easy for shorter friends for using of my gear when swapping !

i remember at hookipa a few years ago during a freesail photo shoot with the editor, that michael brown did a really big unhooked stalled forward for the camera.

as he committed at the apex, he managed to stick his whole head in the harness loop just as the whip commenced!!!

sh1t we laughed, what a prang!
