Just perusing the new Naish brochure and details.

That new Stealth may look a bit cool amongst the KA Koncept crowd at Sandy Point this season.

The speed board seems very close in diamensions to my Missile.

perhaps lining the two up may be a good comparison of the value of cutouts.

A speed sail on a skinny mast mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm.

Hey RAL,

the Naish Stealth 6.0 (05 model) rigs on a skinny - only thing it rigs on in fact.

I have seen the 06 model and was not as impressed as the shape appeared to be a lot flatter, having less draft.

The interest I have here is in the speed area.
and in particular what powers my Missile 11.

my quiver of Koncepts work brilliant, and when the wind is on at Sandy point the beach is covered in Koncepts.
Which have also had comments on being a bit Flat.
However they are supplying copious quantities of speed.

They do however, due to the cams, need std. Dia. Masts.
I have often thought that a thinner leading edge may have some pluses.

One Day my skill level will increase enough to test it out.

And I am only interested in the 5.0m

RAL, I have heard that the 07 Koncepts will be fuller down low. The mast question is not clear. Some fast guys likes the thicker leading edge especially with bagged out sails for deep courses. Other swear by skinnies but I think it may be more their flexability than the LE radius.

Ral,

the best comment I have is comparing an Ezzy Infinti 5.7 rigged on a std mast vs a skinny.

With the std diameter mast this sail has a wind range (for me) from about 18 - 23 knots. It really lacked in low wind bottom end power (even at recommended downhaul - 1 to 3cm). When the wind was up and the sail was fully powered it became very 'twitchy' around the low 20 knot range. I really did not like this sail and was about to sell it.

Changed the cams over and rigged it on a skinny - WOW what a difference. All of sudden - more draft and better low end power. More downhaul and the sail just keeps improving - can hold this sail up to 33 knots. Sail also able to run at 100 -120 degrees off the wind much better (not as good as a Stealth but not far behind).

While I would love to attribute this to the mast I think it is due to the sail design.

From a purely aerodynamic point of view, the RDM mast should be faster as every foil shape has an ideal nose radius which is generally much less than the radius of a mast. For a foil in water, having the correct nose radius is more important than a perfect sectional shape. Aspect ratio is even more important in this theoretical world. Where it comes unstuck is when you put all this into the real world where wind changes and masts flex. That's my two cents worth. I'll have to dig out my books for a more thorough rant.

The '06 Naish has plenty of draft around the boom area and goes like sh%t off a shovel. The 5.5 can be held in 40 knots of wind with no trouble, sail is incredibly stable and slippery with very little drag. The 5.0 has a working range from 30 knots up, not sure what the upper wind range is as I have never had it out in more than 45 knots. Can't wait to try them on the "Pit" this Spring, it will be nice to see something other than a KA on the water.
