Hey there

looking to get anotheer sail Currently have a 5.5 Storm on a 91ltr FSW. Can only afford to buy one at a time. Which size to get for the coming conditions 6.2 or 4.5. I have to come in when it gets over about 20Knts at saftey bay as I just get overpowered on the 5,5 Storm. Which size next for the kit ?? Was looking at the Storm or NP alpha 6.2 or 4.5 ASny help appreciated.

Depends what you mean by coming conditions? If you mean the autumn "no wind" problem, yes 6.2!!!! If you mean the next "season" when we do get some wind (winter) then yeah, smaller. I think 4.2 is too much of a gap, I'd go 4.5 - 4.7 and just sail the lulls (20kn instead of the 30-35)

Now, don't want to start a flame war again (honest ) but after sailing a Storm, if you bought a NP you would be (1) impressed with the stability and wind range (maybe more than the Tushy Storm) and... (2) unimpressed with the durability. I get the feeling you may land on the rig now and then, especially as you go out in the nuclear winter that WA is going to have in 3 months (fingers crossed), and you also may be going secondhand?? Pre crinkled mono can be a bad buy! Buy all x-ply like the Storm and you'll be stoked.
Go 4.7 in Tushy Storm, Severne, Ezzy (Wave, or if you want a bit of power an Infinity), Naish, Maui Sails, Goya, Simmer. not in that order.....

maintain the stoke..............

I thought the NP would be more durable than the tushy ??? I wil probaly by new as the wife is making plans for Kidly winks which I fear may cut into my funds for toys! Is it true that having the same sails through the sizing is better for the progressing sailer ?? I tending towards a 4.5 as its a bit of a shame went I cant rig small when the wind geyts up and I tend to wreck myself and my board with the 5.5 Storm ?? On another point the storm 2006 rigs with a few wrinkles around the bottom is this commom for Tushy. ??

Hey Paddy,

You know about putting on more downhaul and outhaul when it's windy, right?
Lots and lots of outhaul makes the sail really flat, gives you an extra 5 knots wind range.

You should be able to get more out of a 5.5 than just 20 knots... unless you weigh like 40 kgs

Comrade Mark
When was last time you use NP... especially Alpha which has only been out this year ?
I hope your foot healing is well so we can go sailing and you trying of this sail.. maybe you change your mind... maybe you not but at least we will be sailing and you will be trying of it !
Comrade Paddy,
I agreeing with Comrade Mark regarding size... 4.5 is very big jump in size.. maybe you think of 4.7 ?
Also wave sail is very much stronger than other freestyle and race type sail.. maybe you look at wave sail for small sail size ?
6.2 Alpha is very good sail but if you are overpowered on 5.5 then maybe bigger sail is not for recommending ?
Maybe also you waiting few more weeks and some sailors will be turning over of the gear for the end of season.. maybe you can be buying of 2 sails second hand for mucj expansion of quiver instead of just one sail.
Also like Comrade Mark say.. maintain the stoke

I bought 2 Alpha's - they are not really what I thought they would be... Feel very 'boom-y'. Back handed unless it's EXACTLY the right wind strength. I got talked into them cos I'm heavy (87kg) but wouldn't recomend them unless you're 100 +. And then you should go speed sailing!

I've got a 5.4 and 4.7 rigged on 430 and 400 X6's. (Had an X9 at the start of the season, but pinged it first time up to Gero in December...)

Hi Paddy.
I guess that you'd better work out whether you want a sail for stronger or lighter winds before you go any further. Whichever way you go, I would recomend staying with sail of the same model, or one with a similar feel to your Tushie 5.5. (ie, a Rock)
As importers for Tushingham, (along with the many satisfied owners) I know that their performance, ease of use, durability & wind range are the qualities that always places them at, or very near to, the top of the reviews.
http://www.tushinghamsails.com/reviews.asp?id=20

Like other posters, I would also say that a 4.7 would be the smallest that you should go for as you will get a lot more use out of it,
(unless you're a fly-weight).
I would recomend either the 4.75 Storm or the 4.7 Rock. Both have a phenominal wind range, with the Rock having a slightly smaller boom length. www.tushinghamsails.com/reviews.asp?id=23
There are other variables as well. As Nebbian say's, down haul, along with the correct mast, should give the Storm a pretty wide wind range.
Another important factor, especially for (weedy) Safety Bay, is the fin.... there are a lot pretty mediocre weed fins out there that do nothing to enhance a boards performance, especially in the stronger wind conditions.
Feel free to come in & demo the sails.
Regards.
Jez

Hi Thanks Jez

Icurrently using a 30cm weedy Bright green and black cant remember the brand but seen a few around. is that right for a 5.5 ?? Is this an OK brand or is better available? I am swaying to the 4.7 as I would like to go out when it is stronger without wrecking my gear mainly the nose on my board !!!

Paddy,if you drop in to try the sail, I'll check it out. If it's a select weed 'free' then it may be a little large for the stronger wind/water conditions. On the whole, the Select range are reasonable mid-priced fins.
There are, as most users will agree, no better weedfins than the carbon 'Leading Edge' weedies, and I'm pleased to say that we will shortly be receiving a new stock of them. Orders will be taken for specific sizes.

Cheers.
