Pinched from a thread on rec.windsurfing

Sounds like a nice foam, wonder how long it will take to get here so people like stonesurf & bluejuice can use it.

heya! i too read about a new surf/windsurf capable foam recently though it didn't say it was based on the bomb/weopon type used. This stuff I read about was also closed cell, safe to use with both polyester resins and epoxies, plus oil and silicone based materials, and is only something like .250 grams heavier per square metre than coolite/ esky polystyrene that's currently used. I'm pretty sure it was in the news section of the Boards or Planchmag websites. However, I read about this before the clark foam shutdown, so it's a wonder we haven't heard any more about it by now

Sounds like great news!

did you know you can buy Rohacell IGF foam in 31kg/m^3 density. its the best foam in the world, its an acrylic based closed cell damage tolerant foam. After doing research on it all last year it would be my choice of foam for a blank and then use the rohacell 71kg foam for an outer skin.
the only problem is price. however coz the foam has to come direct from the factory in germany you can get it cut the the exact sizes you want.
I guess if a few ppl ordered blanks the shipping costs would be ok i guess, but you would be looking at US$400 per blank.

Yes a bit expensive and a bit heavy, especially for bigger boards.
Theoretically you could cut down a bit on skin weight but in practise that's not easy.

Would be great for a smaller high wind bulletproof wave board but!

If the subsequent post on rec dot is anything to go by, the warhead stuff is 2lb / cu ft..... that is 70kg/ m3 ouch

With regards to rohacell I don't see the need..... it is hard enough to snap a double sandwich board that is built right

BIG OUCH!!!! that's skin density, but thought I read that they've modified it and reduced the density to "light weight", may be that's relative to it's oringinal density not normal clark foam density.

True, but it's the closed cell nature that's attractive. How much more would you pay for not having to worry about doing up, undoing a bung,
and knowing the board isn't going to fill up with water when you ding it, or one of the boxes/plugs come loose.

Yeah don't have a problem now that I am in the routine of doing up and undoing the bung.
First two boards I forgot, so gave a them a lick of paint and sold them to Euro's as being brand new and built a bit heavier for WA conditions
