Replacing my whole set-up, (as you all should know by now).

Just wondering, with new sails having a much wider wind range, what step size is needed now between sail sizes. (I think we used to have around 0.5 to 0.7m steps back in the dark ages.)

Thanks,
Harrow.

What type of sails?

wave I would still stick around 0.8 or even smaller
freeride 1.0
race 1.2 (greater if you can hold it) 5.5-7.0 is a reasonable step.

Obviously the smaller the sail/windier the smaller the increments, sub 5m sails pretty close increments.

Wave sails are all I can coment on. If I was watching my pennies, I'd have a 5.3 and a 4.5. That would get me wave sailing from 12 to 30 knots.
But I've got a 5.3, 7.8 and 4.3 doesn't change the wind range much, it's a smother transition with more overlap.
Altough the sails have a huge comfortable range, at the top end of the sails, I'm just going too fast, and tend to outrun the waves, I'd rather be less powered up and have more control, guess that's my surfing background

Depends on size and type of sail. Formula sailors will jump from an 11m to a 9.0m easily whereas a wave sailor will have difficulty jumping from a 5.3m to a 3.3m in the same sesh (unless it gets real windy real quick!!) A general rule of thumb can be the bigger your sails are the bigger your gap can be and the smaller they are the smaller the gap will be.
When i had formula and wave sails (only wave sails now) my kit sizes were 10.9, 9.3, 8.5 formula sails, then a 6.9 freestyle 6.2, 5.4, 4.7, 4.2 wave sails.
The formula/race sails could handle bigger gaps because they had a huge wind range.
