G'day all...

A bunch of mates and myself are interested in participating to the next Ledge Point - Lancelin Marathon...But we don't know when, where, what, who, why, how much ..etc...

Anybody knows when this race will take place and where we could get info and get registered for the next one (January/February 2006 ??)

With which type of sail (size) & type of board do you guys use for this race ?

Is it a long downwind run ?

How long does it take ? (approx.)...

Cheers !

The race is a massive downwind slalom race that ends at the endevour pub.
this year i did the ledge to lano on just under an hour on wave gear but was only planing 60% of the time. the top guys had already finished their first beer(s) b4 i even hit the beach.

next year i plan to run on formula kit if its light, but hey use what u have??? most go for a big slalom board with a weed fin and sail to suit the wind conditions.

A provisional calender has it down for Saturday 7th Jan 2006 with slalom on the Sunday. Nola Brown is the organiser. If you put her name and "lancelin" into google you'll get all the contact details (email address and phone numbers etc). I don't think they have changed from previous years.
There is a report on the last years event on the Severnesails site under "news" ...it's at the bottom of the popup page. Jesper won on a Sonic100 and most were on similar sized kit but previously there were a couple of light wind events where formula kit was the go...but that was a bit unusual. In early Jan usually the seabreeze is pretty solid.

I did this last year on a trusty 50 buck 6.5 race sail and ancient windtech slalom 8'6". It was an awesome experience, especially running off the beach at the start trying to find clean air. Although you have to point to the first mark, the rest of the race is very deep off the wind, so you need to use a bigger sail than you think if you want to remain powered up. Ledge to lancelin is about 12km, but you zig zag up and down the coast so you actually sail about 25-30 i think. The really quick guys do it in about 30 mins, it took me 45 and i was off the plane a few times.

They dont start the race till at least a solid 12knots kicks in. As alex said, lots of guys do it on wave gear, but then again there is the really fast guys on the latest slalom gear as well. Just about everyone is in it for a good time though, so i wouldnt worry too much if you dont have the right gear.

I think its about 40 bucks or so, and you need to be a member of windsurfing wa which is probably another 40/50 dollars. You also need to buy/borrow a bouyancy vest and some flares. But really its all worth it, especially for the party that night at the pub!

Here is some pictures of the start to get you amped up!
