I learnt to sail at the back beach in Dampier. It's a pretty popular spot for windsurfing.

Unfortunately I was too young to remember the wind strength / frequency etc. Although during summer I remember windsurfing every day for 4 weeks with two sails - 4.7 and 5.3 (I weighed about 60kg prolly)

Sailing can vary. At times the wind is howling and there is no water - given the 7m tides. You can sail in Dampier Harbour on a sea breeze, Hearsons Cove and Cosack Beach on an Easterly. Winds get fairly strong during the summer.

But if all else fails, take the weekend trip to Exmouth. Greeeaaatt spot!

As for Hedland....tried to keep away from that place as much as possible.
