So who around here sailed the first of the Bomboras - the famous "Chopper"?

Hey Chris I remember you being the gun when I was a grommet!

Got any pictures of da chopper? I thought the dromedary was the first - what beast did it evolve from?

It was a cut off standard Windsurfer, ending up as 9 foot long with a squared of tail with foot straps. I still have one under my house.

The bamboo sailboard came from this site.

www.bamboosurfboardshawaii.com/%e3%82%b9%e3%83%bc%e3%83%91%e3%83%bcp%e3%83%95%e3%82%a9%e3%83%bc%e3%82%b9%e3%81%a8%e6%97%a9%e6%bc%8f/

I remember seeing info on the choppers in the magazines but had assumed they were Customs like Mark Pauls Ex-Parrot designs.

With hindsight it's hard to believe that these were serious attempts to design the first short boards. Like a Jack Black movie it's a little hard to grasp the lack of sophistication ("Dudes I've chopped the back three feet off my windsurfer!!"
"Whooo, totally awesome dude") but with Australian accents and a few more square words.

I think you meant "the gumby"!

The Chopper, as other people have already said, was the original Windsurfer with the back cut off, a bit of laminex (on mine) stuck over the back, footstraps (no sockets, just plugged straight into the deck) and more nose rocker.

You couldn't actually turn it, but I still remember my brother and I seeing them when they first came out in about 1980 and thinking they were the most radical thing around.

Hey AUS 4, any chance of bringing your one up to the nationals next season so we can have a look?
