I'm not sure the ad for a competing service on the same page does a lot for the credentials of this story.

I'm with you Harrow. Good marketing on their part!
No the internet is not safe, but then, neither is crossing the road.
Designed as an open network to allow free flowing information exchange with multiple paths for the military/rich uni's, security was never built in. Anything done now is a retrofit.
Admittedly there are some good security systems for the front end that you use to buy stuff these days, but the security to the database that stores the info is more important. It's usually the cleaner that makes heaps of money selling a list they "found" in the bin after hours.
