Of all the capital cities Perth is obviously the best place for a windsurfer to live but where would be second? In fact how would people rank the cities?
I've lived in Melbourne, Sydney and currently Brisbane and done some windsurfing in Adelaide. This would be my ladder
1. Perth 2. Melbourne 3. Adelaide 4. Brisbane 5. Sydney 6. Hobart 7. Darwin 8. Canberra
The last three are guesses and I would be interested to here experiences there, particularly Hobart - would have thought it gets good fronts. I've kept stats. while in Melb. and Bris., averages per year are
____________Wave Slalom Formula | 4.0m^2__4.7__5.5__6.5__8.5 | Total ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Melbourne__25_____25_____0_____|__4_______15__16___15__0__| 50 (days per year) Brisbane____5_____18_____10_____|__1_______3 ___5___14__10_| 33
It was ten years ago I was in Sydney and only during summer/autumn. I'd rate as good. I'd say its very similar to Brisbane, 10-20 knots seabreeze, not sure what happens in winter. Moving to Brisbane I was suprised how little winter sailing there is, the weather is fine, fine ,fine ........
I've just returned from Port Stephens, 2hrs north of Sydney - 4 days =8.5 m^2, 1 day = 6.6 m^2, 1 day =5.7 and 1 day =sitting around.
Over here in the west, since the 11th (9 days), I've had 1 x 5.7 1 x 5.3 2 x 4.7 1 x 4.1 But that includes a weekend in Bunbury, It never blows in Bunbury (Take off 2 days). So it's 5 sails in 7 days And it looks like we'll have another one this arvo.
I thought you understood, i thought you cared. How wrong i am, how disappointed i am. Greenie, i do hope that your cognative difficulties improve in time, and then maybe, and only maybe can you really grasp the concepts that me and hardie are so familiar with. Then you might understand. My friend Richard Branson will be getting in contact with you shortly, he gets very annoyed when apsertions are cast aginst my character.
i am currently in Tasmania and while i have not lived in hobart. it would be pretty good.. Tasmania is the windiest state in australia.. just look at the statistics from the BOM. and it's a small island so you can drive 3 hours and be sailing in at least 25knots most days. 6 hours and you can go from hobart to marrawah. but i am sure there are some big wave spots for windsurfing on the east coast too..
i would not live in tassy in winter though and am not going to. but summer is ok. only real problem is that you need a wettie all year, and tasmanians can't drive for ****. 10 - 20KM/H under the speed limit and when you get to overtaking lanes they speed up to about 20KM/H over the speed limit.
i agree poida i worked on the burrup for 3 months last year durring the months of april, may, june and july i lived in dampier and yes it was windy ******** cove was always howling
Hey Curac, Go easy on the Tasmanians cant drive, sure the oldies drive like that but its no different than Melb ecept there are no 5pm rushes. BTW definately plenty of wind down here Im in Lton so only 4hrs to Marrawah. Only prb is mostly sail alone or with one or two others as there arent many people who windsurf down here.
Jimmy
It feels like its only ever windy when Im at work!
Most of Sydney is pretty bad if you run a short board. The best place is Botany Bay, which is quite good when it blows for shortboard. However from experience most other places in Sydney would drive a WA sailor into taking up flying model aeroplanes.
The really funny thing is - I reackon - except for Botany Bay - (I live in Sydney and have tried all sorts of gear, except formula), that if you went out everyday most days a sailor would be overall faster with a 50 buck Wally and a decent new rig than they would be on anything else...
You can't put Melbourne before Sydney...there aren't any waves in Melbourne!
Have lived in Brisbane, Perth, Melbourne and Sydney and out of those places I'd rate 1. Perth - obvious
2. Sydney - Had some of the best sails of my life at Wanda (more fun then Lancelin, Gero), Long Reef Point goes off in big southerlies, Mona Vale, Gerroa down the road....Although the wind will frustrate, on it's day is heaps bettter for wave riding then Perth.
3. Melbourne - The bay is pretty lame, but Sandy point is sick and obviously the wave spots down south.
I think no2 after Perth Is Kalgoorlie, I remember having some of the best wavesails of my life there. I must admit I was drinking a lot in those days, and can't remember the name of the best wavesailing spots there, but it was sick........ Well I used to get sick a lot when I used to try and skull a bottle of Wild Turkey, but it was really really sick man........Kal is one sick place man, I remember I was sober one day, and everything looked really different, sort of really dry and stuff, so I thought f#ck this staying sober for a joke, and me and Jack used to have a great time together, I remember one of the streets was really cool at night, the chicks were so friendly, I was pretty poor in those days, well I'd end up poor somehow, I don't know where all my money went.......
I must admit I didn't do much wave sailing when in Melbourne. So when I moved to Brisbane I thought that would increase, but it does seem mostly flat water. So Brisbane wave sailors where do you go, the Gold coast - my attempts to sail there have been hampered by light winds, unlucky?
Related question, since most readers are from WA - does Perth itself have surf beaches, how far from city?
perth has surf beaches, but there is an outer reef system which reduces swell size by the time it gets to perth so tends to be smaller, from perth city about 10-15 minutes to nearest surf beaches, bout 1 hr 15 mins from Perth to get to world class venues such as Lancellin, and my 2 favourite spots Kalgoorlie, and Hyden. hyden probably has the most consistent big wave in Australia, it's always 5 metres!! That's a fact!!
I know it's off topic, but I try anyway...Will be moving to Sydney to study. How often will I get to surf (wind) with my biggest board beeing around 100L for my 80kg's?
