A mate and I are looking at going on a windsurfing holiday at the end of this year. From what I have read on this site Perth sounds like the ultimate place! (I love the sun). I live in Taupo NZ where we mostly lake sail in Bump and Jump conditions. I own a JP Freeride Carve 116 and also a Starboard Acid 77. My sails range from 4.2 up to 7metres. We are thinking about either two or three weeks sometime around christmas. Should we bring gear or can you hire kit easily around Perth? Also how reliable is the wind at that time of year? How many people do you have sailing at a popular spot at once, does it get crowded?
Neither of us are experienced wave sailors by any stretch of the imagination so where are the best places to get some high wind Bump and Jump action?
Any suggestions or comments would be appreciated.
Cheers and Happy sailin!

Bring your gear if you can get it on the plane for cheap. Maybe leave your big board and buy a 90-100 litre board here, for our lighter days. Jan went off this year, lots of 20+ knot days but Dec sucked.
100's of places to sail. Lancelin is the closest spot for having a great time (ie wind / waves / flat water / surf/ parties / European Girls) but it can get busy. Get a van and go find some uncrowded places.
Definately worth coming over for...

Leave the big board at home. Bring the 77 or up to 85l & sails to 5.8. If you can sail Taupo in 4.2 conditions you'll have no problems here. Leave the wetsuit at home !! Lots of places to sail. Rent a van or wagon.
Post closer to your visit & I'll give you a call.

Thanks Deano. I like the sound of no wetty. We never really get warm wind here even in the middle of Summer because our prevailing wind SW comes off the mountains.
Im a little afraid to come over there for a holiday because I may not want to come home!
Have you sailed Taupo before?

Once again thanks for the info and I will post closer to the time im comin over.

Nah I'm a Jaffa. But lived all over NZ. Sailed Taranaki during the winter & Lyall Bay in a Southerly. They are cold & gusty enough. You will find the wind here very steady. Not gusty like NZ.

I came here on holiday Feb 04 & was back by June 04 !! Its much more laid back than Maui or Noumea with lots more room to sail and very friendly locals.

Look forward to seeing you.I'll help you out where ever I can. Guess your thinking more of Snowboarding at present ? Me I'm still not wearing a wetty.

Yip sure are, gotta get my season pass before the end of this month! Hopefully there will be heaps of snow again this year.
Still windsurfing tops the list of things to do though even in the winter. Fair to say im addicted i would think!
Forecast here tomorrow on the lake is fine weather and a 40knot southerly to come through. Fingers crossed it happens. (think i will be wearin my wetty though!)

Good to hear the locals are friendly up that way too. Mind you I have never met a windsurfer who is a complete @sshole. Most people I have meet through this sport a really cool people.

Cheers

Hey Deano, what are the pro's and con's of living in Perth compared to NZ. I mean not just the windsurfing but general day to day stuff, work etc. How easy/hard is it to find work over there. (Im a Graphic Designer here in NZ with 14 years experience in the industry). Just cought up with a mate thats been living in Perth for the last 4 years and absolutley loved it and would go back tomorrow if he could. He even got into kitesurfing (not windsurfing) while he was there, had to give him a hard time over that one!!!
Cheers - and thanks for any info.

The pro's far out weigh the cons. There's just to many to list. For me it's just paradise. Cheap housing, beachside life style, plenty of employment, great weather. I left the move far to late in life. Just come with an open mind. You will love it.

R we talkin about kitesurfing or windsurfing here? With the number of NZ kiters moving to WA I'm gonna have the entire country to myself soon... ha. But whatta bout polies? Unlike kitesurfing NZ has great windsurfing conditions... no substitute for sheer quantity even if the wind is messy and rainy.

I'd love to see what it's really like in places like Perth. Previous reports from people who have been over there as back have failed to impress me. However i'm sure it can't be any worse than Auckland's winds during Jan and Feb (Dec in AK is still pretty good).

What's it like crowdwise over there? Bearin in mind that NZ beaches are deserted in all months but the height of summer.

Is it true that Perth's conditions for windsurfing are better in winter than summer (once again WINDsurfing...not KITEsurfing)

Hey BLOWN AWAY, Travelling is all about the change of movie, meeting cool people and getting off on the new experience.
NZ is windsurfing heaven but pack your stuff and go man.
Remove yourself from your comfort zone and you'll get new eyes.

From one who has lived in NZ for 42 years. Windsurfed in Noumea, Maui,Wellington, Taranaki, Mt Manganui & all over Auckland. Surfed all over the North & some of the South Island. I would rate Perth the best. If you are willing to travel once you arrive even better. Sure there is not much wind at the moment but we had great Surf in the weekend. I'm still in boards shorts. If yah don't like fine weather, clear water, and summer breeze yah won't like Perth.

Re crowds there are so many places to sail its not a problem. Like all places except Tara's wave sailing can get busy. The beaches are deserted on a summers afternoon because it so windy ! As for Winter great sailing when the fronts come through. Much like Takapuna in a NE.

For me its just a beach lifestyle thats heaven.

Hey Deano the homeland is in danger of gettin banned left right and centre. All cos of us danglers. I sense trouble brewin in the city of squalls (Auckland) so you mite see my fat, hairy, wrinkly ass over in the thermal city (Perth) sooner (next 2 years) as opposed to later (next 10 years).

Back in my polebitchin days before i flew a large paddlin pool i noticed a number of things of difference between windsurfing and kitesurfing.

1) Squalls are your friend. A 40 knot blast is sexy and that cold rain gives you an invigorating blast of youth... and the fact that i had one of Auckland's famous slimy mud oyster beaches to myself in that gorgeous horizontial rain that not even sex with a hippo could match.

2) Quantity comes before quality. In kitesurfing steady winds are much sort after but in windsurfing i love my gusts and poleboarding hotspots like Maui and NZ are very gusty and these places also have a rep for smashin up many a dangler. NZ as you know is renowned for it's brutal nasty weather and an ample supply of galeforce winds that we end up becoming psychos and maniacs that end up chewin barbwire for a livin. Hey that's why we shag sheep... the girls are butt ugly.

BUT i'm now a kiteboarder and have been kiteboardin for about 4 years now. Kiteboardin in NZ is a joke (most places it's too windy) with Auckland being one of the few places in the country where the conditions are good for kiting.

THe insane house prices in Auckland at the mo are stopping me from coming over to Perth for a holiday (i can't afford it if i buy a house) but if i end up flatting due to it being just too damn expensive here AND these bans eventuate (the spots that they are looking to ban are uncrowded beaches that get pretty good wind... i don't see the logic in that somehow)...... then i could very well end up flatting and living... IN PERTH.

Remember this same city stopped an entire speedway from running its reces due to about 30 stuck up snobs saying it was too niosy.... who was there first?? The speedway.

Sunshine, girls, cold beer, hot weather, warm clear water doesn't exactly made me happy.. i can do without that stuff.

But 25-30 knot summer breezes?? sounds good to me cos the winds in Auckland are incredably gusty, infact i don't think you kiters would be able to handle our conditions (yes i know this a poleboardin forum!!).

For sheer windspeed NZ is damn bloody good for poleboardin (Wellington IS the capitial) but it lacks the beach lifestyle of OZ and Perth. THe places in NZ that do have the beach lifestyle like Coromandel and the Mount have no wind.

For kiteboardin apart from the obvious fact that NZ has the most coastline per capita of any county in the world and the fact that there is often ****LOADS of wind. Things like consistancy, temperature (assuming that warmer is better) etc I bet OZ would win hands down.

That's my 5 year rant. I'm goin to sleep now. a 25 knot SW is on the cards tomorrow.. A typicially windy kickass winter is just round the corner so i'll see you bitches later.
