I wonder whether the ignorant arrogant wind surfer who was at Pinaroo point Saturday afternoon has the courage to own up to his actions. I was giving a kiting lesson (IKO) and he deliberately rode within about 30cm of my student.

I offered to discuss why I didn't approve after the lesson but not surprisingly he had disappeared.

To any other wind surfer - This is why there is friction between the two sports. This guy should be admonished by other wind surfers so that he knows his actions were unsafe, rude and not acceptable. I would admonish kiters for behaving like this.

Not only all that but stupid as well!!

It's happened to me few times, trying to waterstart, just abput to throw the rig up in the air and some idiot flys past missing you by inches.
These people seem to pick on learners, or anybody smaller than themselves, they may think it's a great joke, but we are not amused!

SORRY! Lil' Johnny can't say it, but I can! To the poley, you are a tosser! You are doing nothing but exacerbating the animosity between our tribes. Love and peace wind lovers!

I too have nearly been creamed by some pretty good windsurfers. Intimidating you while you are trying to learn a tack or gybe and are clearly not in full control only makes them look like peanuts as far as I am concerned, even though it might make them feel like the king of the high seas.

Unfortunately chaps, I don't think this is a windsurfer vs kitesurfer problem as Paul seems to suggest. I have experienced this kind of behaviour from both windsurfers and kitesurfers.

At Pelican Pt last yr a friend of mine had words with a kitesurfer who was boosting about 40ft in the air quite close to the beach and upwind of where the kites usually tend to congregate - right amongst all the beginner windsurfers, many of whom were too timid to complain so just came off the water.

This weekend, at Safety Bay, my girlfriend, who is learning to windsurf and is just able to waterstart and really enjoying just pottering back and forwards in the footstraps, was sailing around about 20ft from the beach. A couple of guys on slalom/formula kit were flying around in the same area (30kt wind) and seemed to be making a point of sailing as close as possible to the heads of kids in the water and other less experienced windsurfers. One of these guys actually shouted at my girlfriend to get out of his way! It's a big bay, it was right near the beach and he clearly had more control over his direction than she did.

Just two examples of something that happens a lot.

So, my point is that there are unfortunately both windsurfers and kitesurfers out there who are not that considerate of other water users, particularly the beginners, and there are both windsurfers and kitesurfers that probably think they're really impressing people by going fast/high in amongst the beginners when actually, they're scaring the life out of people.

Not sure if there's a solution other than the more experienced windsurfers and kitesurfers just telling the perpetrators that they're being stupid and dangerous and maybe eventually they'll realise that it's not cool.

We were all beginners once.

Paul

I was sailing out the back of Penguin Island in the weekend. Came into Shoalwater to adjust my out haul & was sprayed 3 times by Kite surfers. Next time I came in I had cracked my boom. Same treatment same guys !!!

Let me make it very clear I was not sailing with the kites.

I have the experiance of having another windsurfer hit me in the leg head on at twenty plus knots. I had a compound fracture of Tib & Fib. Skin grafts, muscle flap & bone graft. Very nearly lost my leg. I did not wind surf for 8 months & could not play squash for two years.
I don't appreciate begin put in the position of begin hit again

Just my thoughts. If it would help I can email some very graphic photos we could use to make people more aware of the damage that can be done.

Me I just try to keep smiling cause I'm just happy to still be sailing.

there is a solution to this, attach another sprayer to the back of your car, (email me for an explanation of how to best do it) and put food coloring into a pipe reservoir and wa la a button to press when being tail gated.

I just want to say I appreciate all the positive comments and support of my comments. I hope just reading these comments has educated and changed some of the more ignorant peoples ways. Kiters and sailers alike !

Prey for wind !!!! and be tolerant !!!

fish wanted to do it so i decided to put a copy here

*this requires disabling your rear wind screen washer.*

things you need:
pipe (same dimensions as the already fitted)
nossel that fits on the pipe and makes a long distance spray
way of connecting it together
small plastic container. (around 500 mls)

shared reservoir (one tank for front and back washers)
1. find the supply hose of the rear wind screen washer
2. cut this line in an easy to access position, if there isn't an easy to access spot you can run a pipe to one
3. connect the pipes (original to new), run the pipe to your easy to access spot
4. connect your pipe to the pot, incoming end to the lid
5. run a line from the bottom of the pot to outside your car
6 connect the nossel to the pipe
7. aim
8. put selected color food coloring in the pot with water
use the rear washer when ever you feel like.
9 get friend to get in line of fire and have fun B-D

with reservoir
1. replace wind screen washer nossel with some thing that sends a spray backwards
squirts what ever you put in the reservoir.

it works but you must use your brain to see what would work best.
time to squirt the tailgaters
