I'm going to have a nice windy conditions this weekend and I'm headed in a bay that gives up to 2m waves. I was thinking of giving a shot with ponch or goiter, whatever will be the result.
however I've seen vids of ppl doing it in off shore conditions, but never in on shore conditions, which is available everywhere I surf in 400km radius from my home.
If anyone has some footage, I would be grateful since I really like both these tricks, they just kick ass.
technically possible in cross-on but in onshore you wont land a goiter (unless your already awesome at them).. a goiter is hitting the lip and landing on the same wave..
I think what you mean is a ponch, which is just the same rotation jumping off anything (or nothing)... there are two different names because everyone thought a flat water goiter would be impossible.. ignorance was bliss in 1999..
problem is youll have to catch up with the wave, and going up the back you loose lots of speed and will flop over the front of the wave (flonch).. unless its really shallow but then u run the risk of injury..
here is Robby Swift ponching off the back of a wave..
I imagine a Goiter would be very very hard to land on these conditions, that's why I was asking about Ponch as well. So Basicaly, when I ride at the bottom of the wave, I turn up frondside and throw the sail. Turning on the wave and riding clew first for an attempt (to simulate an off shore condition) wouldn't be an option, lack of speed perhaps?
yeah unless u can manage a decent smack on the lip it would be impossible to try a goiter in the same situation..
in onshore conditions your better off launching off the back of the wave, but like I said waves are sometimes big and they also travel pretty fast, so again its still kinda hard to hit them with speed. which is why most people learn in big chop as its easier to hit the back of a big piece of chop with speed..
a flaka is a very good starting point to a flat water ponch as its a similar movement. But if you cant flaka then its going to make flat water ponches pretty much impossible aswell!!
which is why people learn in cross shore or cross off conditions when ponches are dead easy. (again its still just a ponch if you rotate off the lip and land behind the wave). Its also just as easy to hit a wave on the jumping tack and throw a ponch..
