Anyone had any experience with damaged ligaments on the inside of the knee after a bad jump landing?
I had a great session and got a little cheeky at the end and didn't land one quite right.Back foot slipped out on landing and front foot stayed nice and fixed in the strap. The knee twisted and I felt a pop with pain.
Its not great now but I can still walk if I don't turn.
How long can I expect to be out and how do I know if its a surgery repair?
Thanks anyone who knows.

mmm, sounds like an MCL, Medial cruciate ligament, common motocross injury, that just never really goes away, reason is, and Im not a doctor by any means, is that ligament does not heal as per other parts of the body, once its torn its torn.
In the same circumstance myself from racing moto, I had to strengthen the muscles around the knee, light leg extensions, advancing to light squats, cyclcing is great as it has low impact.
I totally destroyed my right knee meniscus cartliage racing, which is basically the suspension component of your knee, between the tibia and femur, it took about 6 months to get my strength back to go racing, and it is still not 100%, I was advised to get surgery, but was also told it would mean my knee would be bone on bone with athritis setting in early, so I opted to rehab the existing injury, thru cycling, walking progressing to light jogs to running, squats and so on.
My tip is go see a good sports physio, get some treatment.
Dont forget the ICE formula till then, Ice, Compression, Elevation
most of all, good luck! knee injuries suck the puss

Hey Rustle,
Bad luck mate, I did exactly the same thing, one foot in the strap, the other in the water, heard the pop, thought something was slightly amiss. Gave it a rest for half an hour then thought I could maybe get back on the water... no go.
Here's what the magic 8-ball says to expect:
Now that it's been a couple of hours you're probably feeling a bit of pain in there, and you're going to have trouble sleeping cos you'll wake up every time you roll over.
Tomorrow you're going to be in a lot of pain and will consider seeing a doctor. You'll hope that it's just a bit of a sprain or something so will soldier on with a couple of panadol.
The day after you'll say "F* this", see the doctor, he'll tell you that there's nothing they can do except put you on crutches and wrap a bandage around your leg to make it look like they did something. He'll tell you that it will take 3-6 weeks before you can go on your windsurfer again, and another month before you're as good as you were before today.
The good news is that it sounds like it's the MCL, medial collateral ligament, which fixes itself without surgery. The bad news is that you're off the water for a month. I did mine around Christmas last year, and it was as good as new within a couple of months. I did the overland track in Tasmania (80 km in 7 days carrying a 20 kg backpack) just one month after doing it, so don't feel as if it's the end of your knee. Do some googling to sort things out in your own mind though.
*PEEEP* Red card!!

I am seeing a physio today.
If all else fails I will resort to bionics or spare parts from third world countries.
I will come back from this and floop.

Hi Rusle, I did the left knee mcl last season. Go straight to a Physio or the muscle will waste very quickly. It took me 3 months to go out again because I saw doctor 1st who just gave anti inflams. 3wks before getting the pyhsio and they claim they can get you going in 5 weeks. It took me a lot longer because of the delay

I did much the same 18 months ago. Went to the Dr's for a referral for a MRI -- fortunately it wasn't torn right through so 5 weeks of light excercise bike work and a full brace to support it for the first couple of weeks got me back on the water. Now it just aches most of the time 'cos of the meniscus damage but when I sail I use a small wetsuit material brace with a couple of hinged supports.
I think the small brace is mainly for my piece of mind rather than any great knee support.
Good luck.......

Went to the Physio. He said to never stay within your limits and to keep pushing hard until pushing up daisies and if I haven't done a forward loop then I should get on with it.
Well he didn't say that exactly but I like to interpret things my way.
Thanks for all who have replied with valuable information.
Diagnosis- grade 11 partial tear of MCL.Stabilise in a brace 2 weeks, recovery another 2 weeks and get back on the water go easy for another month.
Now I just have to find a use for all this knitting gear I bought..

well John, 4 weeks sounds better than 4 months!
Just do what you can to build up the strength after the rehab, "strong like bull"
good luck and speedy recovery!

I did mine 18 years ago sailing a longboard. Six weeks on crutches, then lots of leg strengthening exercises. Seems to be the trendy thing to do!

i agree with md74 on all points. rode a pushie for a year and afterward knee was best it has ever been. swimming is good too. got to build up muslces to help hold joint together. if you find a good physio stick with them. don't get friendly w them tho. they are all ex gestapo. cold hearts and no empathy. god they know how to tourture. the best way to prevent knee damage, get a stamp collection
