Hi, 1st post.

I'm an intermediate-ish sailor that wants to get into sailing at Queen's Beach because it's close to where I live (I usually sail at Golden).

I want to buy some new gear suitable for bay sailing starting with sail of about 6m. I was thinking of an Ezzy Infinity, but I'm still wondering if a wave sail might be better. I will definitely be getting a 5.2 wave sail for higher winds.

Can anyone tell me if you prefer wave sails or freeride sails for bay sailing at Redcliffe?

i prefer wave sails for freeride sailing at redcliffe. especially if you are talking 6m and down.

7m and up then slalom/race, i guess that goes without saying.

when the wind is up it gets very bumpy at redcliffe. and around at suttons and margate you get waves.

in a SE queens beach north is farily flat off the beach and as you go further out the swell just gets bigger and bigger.

During a NE winds the swell comes all the way in at queens.

you could even justify using a pure wave board at redcliffe for when the wind is howling.

edit" p.s welcome onboard. will prob see you on the water sometime. i love sailing at redcliffe. it rocks.

So would say in 15-20 kts you need the high clew of a wave sail to be comfortable in the chop?

I'm not looking to go out in verys strong winds at Queen's right away. I need to build experience in lighetr stuff first.

Can't comment on Queens Bch But,
I have a 6.6 Infinity & sail mostly in gusty chop, I love it
I'm 85Kg on a 100L board, and sail this combo 90% of the time. The Infinity has a good wind range and handles well. I'm mostly just blasting up & down the coast, and small old fella jumps.
The young guys here, who are into all the tricks, are on wave sails. Guess it's what ya after but the smaller wave sail for high winds sounds good.

Well, I can't see myself doing much wave sailing, probably a bit to old for that. But "old fella jumps" and blasting in rough, open water is exactly what I'm after.

I was planning on getting an 7m Infinity to replace my old Gaastra Flow and thought the Infinity 6 would make a good companion sail for use in open water.

I have a 103 litre Mistral Classic, which is a pretty old board now but still giving me heaps of fun. It's possibly a bit "gunny" for rough water though. Thinking about getting a new Mistral Syncro in the same size. I weigh about 83 Kilos.

Yes I think 6/7 infinity would be a good choice. I use 5.7/6.6 infinity at queen's on a 94l and find it fine for blasting type sailing. I've taken the same gear out in waves on the GC no problem. Sticking to same model when buying a couple of sails I think is also a good idea.

Do you find the Infinitys heavy? I have an 8.5 and it seems a bit heavy bit is a _big_ sail. Are you happy with the weight of yours?

Also, what mast are you using with them? An Ezzy skinny mast of some other? carbon content?

Actually have an 8.5, I was surprised how manageable such a large sail is but I guess it feels heavy, the quoted weight is 5.1 kgs (a Neil P V8 is quoted at 5.8kg). It's the only large sail I've used. For that one the mast is a one piece sailworks which I bought 2nd hand in early 90's probably < 50% carbon?

6.6 -> 75% ART
5.7 -> 30% fibrespar

After breaking a standard mast (75% C) 2K off shore, I got the Ezzy skinny to suit. It does rig different, but I'm not sure if I can tell the difference on the water I paid the bucks hoping it'll last & also because the sail is suppose to suit it. When I get a smaller sail, I only have to get half a mast to suit, mix & match.
Just my 2c, but if you are going for a new mast, go the skinny.

I'm looking to get new masts as well. The two Fiberspars I have are both ten years old. 460 and 490 @ 30%. Too old to trust?

Guys,

I use a an Ezzy Infinti 5.7 as my "high wind" 23-34 knots sail. The sail - rigged on a skinny has amazing range and control - especially in high wind - but you must have the skinny mast - it improves both bottom and top end performance and set for this sail. With a Standard diameter mast they lack bottom end and top end.

As for sailing in the bay condtions - A 6.6 ezzy is a nice controllable rig, the cambers help with power, yet the short luff pocket does not make it too hard to sail. Good choice foe Moreton Bay.
