Noticed that the GSP speed-sailing website suggests that the Foretrex is more waterproof than the Geko, even though the manufacturers specs give them the same waterproof rating. Does anyone with a Geko reckon it is just as wateproof as the Foretrex?

I am planning to use an Aquapac anyway, so I thought the Geko would be best choice since the front mounted buttons would be easier to operate through the Aquapac. Is this right?

If you are using an aquapak (which you should for either GPS), the biggest issue is the track logging. The foretrex logs 10,000 points, thus recording your whole day.

Also, most users on GPS-speedsurfing are using the foretrex, just so that there are no questions as to the legitimacy of the track logs.

If you have a choice get the foretrex as it is a better unit than the geko, as per matthew's points. I have no problems operating foretrex through the aquapac and I can see it well for racing starts. If it is the Geko Vando had there were alot more spikes also.

Hi Harrow The Geko 201 has a similar chipset to the Fortrex.
It also stores 10000 track points 20 routes and so on.
But the Geko 201 is the same price as the fortrex 101.
I would go for the Fortrex 101.
dont forget the aquapac with arm strap $50.
ta Vando

Mk7 I had the Etrex which is alot different.

Ah yes, now i remember. There are now some 201's having batteries replaced in them (back to garmin job)... the reason why i got a 101 (something else to consider).

Looks like the new AquaPac Pro Sports Mini is the one to buy. Yes? MapsDownUnder sell them, but they're in Victoria, so I want to be sure it will fit !!!!

I would get the Gecko 201. Same Functionality as the Foretrex 201 except for the start watch, and internal battery.

They have been more reliable then the Foretrex, and you should use either with a waterproof case.

A lot of the sailors in the NSW race fleet have GPS, and many of the Foretrex have had to be warrantied.

The best case is a "Boxit" Mobile phone case, which is semi solid and more robust then an aqua pack.

Harrow, my understanding is that the "waterproof rating" is not much more than a standard test method, eg, submersible for 5 min @ 1 metre or whatever, rather than an actual indication of its actual performance. My Magellan Meridian GPS has the same rating as does a lot of other so called waterproof electrical equipment. You've got the right idea using an Aquapac. Even though they say these GPS's are waterproof, the water pressure acting on the seals is a hell of a lot higher when wiping out at speed, compared to holding a GPS stationery under water for a certain time. If I were you I'd treat them as though they are really just water resistant and let the Aquapac do the work.

Unfortunately no arm band.

I have been using the strap from an old Ronstan start watch, but it wouldn't be to difficult to make one. There are slots to thread a strap.

Whitworths in NSW have the Boxit cases.

is that the Boxit's or the aquapac's? If they come with slot's awesome I can probably use the original foretrex band... or just wait till my current aquapac breaks and get the smaller one.

Actually the one thing I do like about the walkie talkie case is the fact it floats if torn off... I have now added a small amount of foam so it floats higher in the event of another 30+knot crash (a bit hard to see in the chop).

The boxit has slots, but no armband. It floats as well

According to this it does come with a nice neoprene and velcro armband.....and a caribiner to attach to a belt, etc.

According to the manufacturers, Boxit is rated to 3ft depth, the Aquapac Pro mini is rated to 30ft. That's impressive !!!!!!!

G'day Harrow,

I have the Geko and have found it a good unit.

I use it in a aquapac with I bung down the front of my wet suit (between my man boobs).

I actually get less dicky readings with it there than when I used to carry it outside my wetsuit.

I have found that with the Buttons on the face of the unit it can start doing things by itself and have had my max speed reset a couple of times.

Myself I wouldn't get a strap-on GPS as me and the water regularly embrace each other at speed and as Tony W from Sandy piont recently found you can lose the lot quite easily with a crash(including the data for a possibly best this season session).

GPS's are great for taking the bull out of speed sailing and can be great tools for improving technique and setup.

But..Be warned!!! GPS's are EVIL, ya crack your PB's for the first 6 months and then you spend the next year trying to better them by 0.1knot

I prefer the aquapac because I like to have the gps strapped to my upper arm so I can still read the face and easy access the buttons while still sailing. Can you use the boxit with the foretrex as its buttons are on the side, I know the boxit has flexible front face but what about the sides.I haven't had any probs with the foretrex since using the Aquapac. I have heard people having probs with the inbuilt batteries but thats only with the foretrex 201 not the foretrex 101 it uses 2 AAA. ta Vando

Haaaa, yes I can see that coming a mile off. Actually I was hoping it would make me a better sailor, since instead of backing off during the gusts in Botany Bay chop, I will be cranking the sail in!! Anyway, as long as others get some joy from observing the impending wipeouts, it will be worth it.

By the way Elmo, have you tried any of the Geko's built-in GPS games while sailing? The snake game could be a lot of fun on a one design!

Yes you can access the buttons on the side. Sam Parker carries his Foretrex 201 in a Boxit.

Doesn't a Foretrex 101 have less memory for storing trackpoints?

I've had several Aquapacs, develop splits in the seams , or punctured, so prefer the tougher Boxit.

And you can easily wear it on the upper arm, you just need a strap long enough.

Sam and I have been using GPS for Training and Speedsailing for a few years now.

Chris, The only diff between the 101 and the 201 is the in built battery. So far I haven't had trouble with the mini-walkie aquapac.
And they do come with a 3 year Warranty.

My 2 cents worth. I got the Foretrex 101 so I dont have to remember to recharge the battery. Just keep a small supply of AAA's in the glovebox. Much easier at the beach to chuck in fresh batteries. I get about 16 hours use out of 2 AAA's. The other thing is the 201 comes with PC cable for downloading. I got the cable from Johnny Appleseed.
I also got the new Aquapack and it works fine. Came with strap so just put it on your upper arm and forget.
Elmo's spot on there about them being evil. Once you crack the 30 knot barrier its all downhill. Every time you go out its "gotta beat my PB". Even on free ride or wave gear. But it sure improves your sailing.
