Hi everyone
Just wondering what the sail/wind range for a 79L 2004 JP Wave (or something like it) would be. Found site very hard to read and thought i might get an easy awnser here. Also whats best fin size and how big could i go on it. I currently got a 28cm select style fin on my 100L Naish Wave would that be to big for the smaller JP board. Anyone ridden this board or simuilar board, whats it like?
Cheers

Yeah i'm 65kg greeny. My board says that sail range is only to 6.5 or something but i've used a 7.0 on it. Would i get away like that on the JP do you think. I also bought a larger fin for it which made a huge difference. Also US box isn't it.

i wouldnt ever go with a jp. verry weak, but if your only usin it on flat water. for a 79 leater, i would only use 5.0 to a 6.5 but fins thats a hard question because it depends on teh sail size, and the kind of sailing, lets say your doing a cross over between wave and freestyle, i would go for a 28cm freestyle, im your wieght and on my 84 leater i use a 26cm fin, and its not to bad but it is a lil uncontrolable. thats why i would go for a 28.
hope this helped

79l JP wave with a 6.5 m sail and a 28 cm fin? Who are you kidding???
Actually owned one of those boards until 6 month ago and reluctantly swapped it for something different. Kind of a mistake, this is an excellent allround waveboard for riding and jumping, which is fast enough and controlled in chop to be a suitable bump and jump board for higher winds. It planes quite early although for me at 85 kgs gets a bit small for marginal planning conditions. The sweet spot is between a 4,7 and 5,4. Sailed it with a 5,7 a few times but that is about as big as I would go with it. I would recommend an 8,5 to 8,75 inch onshore fin for the larger sizes sails and 7.75 to 8 when you use 4,2 to 4,7. Obviously fin size also depends on overall foils size not just length.
Dont beleive any of that crap about those boards falling apart. The wave boards, at least the one I had for 2 1/2 years was rock solid....

Don't believe the hype about JP's being weak, it's misinformed crap - I'm with Cheer on that one. Any board out of the cobra factory will break under the right or perhaps wrong conditions. 2004 JP wave was one of the great models (great shape, awesome wave riding & top jumper) & have only got better since then though I would not think anything bigger than a 24cm (9 1/2 inch) would be of benefit with the 79L. You'd just be overstressing the fin box. If you want bigger fin carrying possibilities I'd be looking at a freestyle wave type board that use thru bolting fins (power/tuttle), say a JP FSW 84L can handle a 28cm B&J fin (MAX) down to a 21cm wave fin but preferably 85ish L boards are suited to 25cm - the 28cm fin is still better matched for boards over 90L though.

here my 5 cents...
1) JP boards aren't any better or worse than other boards in regards to breaking. I seen both JP and Starboards break on the same beach, same day, same condition by riders with similar ability. Bottom line is simple physics... if you enforce high enough repeated stress on any "light weight" material such as a windsurf board I will break. Mate this is not a $20 billion high tech jet fighter.
2) Re Fin range: I would say 28 cm is too big for a 79L wave board. My upper limit would be 24ish if you use a US box fin and probably 26cm for a Powerbox fin. All JP Wave board (not RealWorldWave) use US box fins.
3) RE Sail range: Given that you only 65kgs I would say you should be able to comfortably use the 79L wave with sail in the range 4.0 to 5.0 . You can probably use upto a 5.5 but I don't believe the trim would that great.
4) RE Wind range: You will probably find that with a 4.0 to 5.0 sail you can cover a range of approx. 18 to 33 knts. for you weight . I actually have a 2004 83 JP Wave. From my experience these are pure down the line wave boards. They need consistent wind with waves to really make sense. Apparently the 2006/ 2007 board are little bit more versatile. I weight 95 kg and use the 83 JP wave with 4.0 and 4.7 sails... in winds up to about 40knts. . Once you go over the 40knt mark things stop being fun. I guess I should get a 74L with a 3.5 sail for those days.

JP's are fine boards, great to sail and well-made, though the Pro Edition models will ding if you smash them. (I own the JP Freestyle 109 Pro edition, and the FSW 93 non-pro, and I've sailed all the FSW models.)
For me at 75K the jump from a 100 liter board to the 79L fsw would be a bit much...the biggest sail I'd carry on the 79 would be a 5.0.
