I had a carbon rdm extension snap yesterday at the hole where the pin was set. Has anyone experienced this before and is it common with carbon extensions?
To me it looks like the failure was due to high bearing stress. The tube looks too thin to take the high bearing load generated by downhauling a sail. The base failed after 5 minutes on the river and just after a jibe so it is not like the base was being loaded due to getting a pouding in waves or anything.

from what i have read it is a very common problem,there are some better designed/constructed carbon rdm extensions out there now though.

I've seen more alloy rdm extensions break than carbons. Go to a carbon one that uses ring and collar, the structure of the tube wont be compromised by having holes drilled through it.

Had a carbon one snap on the hole last month. I had the extension a year or so and used it on that setting plently of times. The hole was second from the top. Not sure if it was related to this. The diameter of the extension wall looked uniform for all the holes. And the extension before that, had also used on the top setting for years and when it broke, was in a different spot. Anyway, just in case, the new extension is a bit longer.
This typed garbage probably means nothing
