Ahoy, SeaBreeze members. I'm looking for some advice re. sails and masts. I'm looking to buy a new rig for flat water, inland blasting to replace the one that my wife purloined at the end of last season after I accidentally got her addicted to my sport. (This was by no means a mistake, but I need a new rig, anyway...)

I've been looking at the NeilPryde Speedster, size 6,7. NeilPryde's website, however (www.neilpryde.com/products/speedster?variant=12519666057239) states the following: "RDM and SDM compatible masts on these sail sizes: 5.7 / 6.2. SDM recommended mast on these sizes: 6.7 / 7.2 / 7.7 / 8.2."

On the very same page, they have an embedded official-like product video in which, at about 1:44, the presenter clearly states that the Speedster sails up to 6,7 are able to "go with the RDM mast".

It was my intention to rig the 6,7 Speedster on an RDM mast because I'm short and light (158cm, 68 kg), not the *most* experienced, and want a "softer" rig. No doubt, this rig will also be borrowed by my aforementioned wife from time to time -- she's of a height with me.

What would your advice be? Will it be fine on the RDM or sub-optimal? Furthermore, as experts, given my height and weight data, what would be your recommended choice?

I've emailed NeilPryde themselves but haven't got an answer, yet, and I'm running out of time to make a decision. Help and advice will be thoroughly considered and much appreciated. (Comments on this choice of sail will also be much appreciated. I don't know a hell of a lot about sails and haven't bought it, yet, so I'm open to input.) (Board's a 119 litre freeride board from JP)

Been light I'd go straight forward the RDM, no doubt

I've RDM masts even for my three-cambered sails (Switchblades) up to 8.5, certainly a bit too much but it works fine

When sailing overpowered or in harsh sea you'll appreciate the forgiveness of the RDMs. Another reason is its durability

Some years ago I had a 6.2 Hellcat which rigged either with a 430 X9 or a 430 Ezzy Hookipa Mast (RDM) and I couldn't tell the differences. I finally ended up selling the SDM

NeilPryde even show the same stiffness number for the RDM 430.

My other rig (the one that my wife now uses) is a 5,8 cross-over sail (can't remember the name but it's also a Pryde sail from a few years back) on an RDM 430 and it's pretty good, now that I've learned not to pull all the shape out of it with the out-haul.

Stepping up to 6,7 is going to be a challenge for me but, at the end of last season, I came to the realisation that my mistakes were board-trim related far more often than I could blame them on being purely overpowered. In the end, there's always the 5,8 to take turns on in a blow.

RDM v's SDM? RDM's with the same IMCS stiffness tend to 'feel' softer and slightly more flexy. This is often a good thing for a lighter sailor.
RDM's tend to rig a little flatter and with slightly finer entry in the lower body. Again, could be an advantage for a lighter sailor.
For a given IMCS, the SDM's are usually slightly lighter in the same C%.

The BIG advantage of RDM's of course is that they are very much more durable. 100% SDM's can ve quite fragile and need to be handled with care for a good long life. 100% RDM's are very much tougher. So if it was a choice between a heavier 60-70% carbon SDM for durability and a 100% RDM, I would definitely go for the RDM. It will probably be lighter than the 70% SDM as well.
