I seem to remember somebody asking an off topic question recently about the difference between skinny and rdm masts and received 2 answers that I don't think were clarified....

Are they just different terms for the same thing or are they different diameters at the bottom?

Same same.

I think the three different types of mast are:

1) SDM (standard diameter mast), also known as a fatty.
2) Dropshape -- North do these, they are standard at the bottom but then reduce in taper so they are almost a skinny by the time you get up past the ferrule.
3) RDM, also known as a skinny. I think that "skinny" might have been a trademark?

OK so with an rdm I would obviously need a new mast foot/extension but presumably they come with the same options for base plate connection (i.e. NP Pin, North Pin, cup thingy)?

As you can tell I havene't bought any new kit for a while

Yep skinny and RDM are the same. Drop shape supposedly gives the benefits of a skinny but with the ability to use a normal extension. Most brands have a skinny extension that will work with their base plate... Skinnies rule I use them for all my sails.

Obviously it works, but how the hell do you adapt something that is too big to fit inside something else, without an angle grinder

Arlo the skinny mast goes inside the chinook extension .You have to get a skinny extension to go inside the skinny mast

Thought as much, it just sounded like a bizarre concept.

Yeah mate i used an art extension with a bolt through it for years with my skinny. Just shimmed the mast with gaffa tape . it worked fine no dammage to mast or extension and i sailed mostly waves at lano.I do have a skinny extension now. My girlfriend is still useing the art . After four years still no dammage to her skinny mast...
