Hey Vando,

You're right, forecast is marginally better, still going to be struggling with a 6.0 though (my biggest sail!)

What's wello like in a North Easter?

well nebbian, you did get your wish. 20knots with gusts above is what the wind meters said for today.

man was i out of control!

cheers to all at Windsurfing Queensland for organising a great event.

Those wind meters are on crack. Biggest gust I got when out there would have been about 17 knots, mostly the wind was 15 or below, so as usual I struggled. Not surprising when everyone else was on 7+ with 120 litre+ boards, and there's little old Nebs trying to get planing back up wind with a 6.0 and a 105 litre board

Good racing though, couple of incidents, including one porkchop who while jostling for the start somehow managed to hit the anchor rope for the official boat and catapult himself heavily...

Yer agree nebs 15-18 would of been about right.

Gestalts just making excuses why he wasnt out there on his 8.5.
great day all round

you guys are joking, all the graphs from caloundra to coolangatta read 20 knots with higher gusts.

everyone on 8+ sails got hammered.

i can tell you it was full on trying to make the formula kit broadreach through that chop and swell. i was totally out of control.

my vote is for 18-22kn, with some holes.

for sure nebbian, you were out bought on the start line. that was an amazing array of expensive gear.

Hey Gestalt,

I agree with Nebs and Vando on the wind.

I sailed between Manly and Wello from 2-5pm.

At best the wind was touching 15 knots.

The weathernow weather station at Manly had the wind blowing from 11-14 knots during this time as well.

Nebs FYI - I was sailing 105 litres and 7.0 sail - was not off the plane all day. (I tip the scales at a (too hefty) 88kg)

Have you been hanging out with the kiters Gestalt ? 15 real knots = 25 kiteboarder knots

hi haircut, lmao, who knows, maybe it wasn't as windy.

it's just all the graphs on the water said 20+ knots. and my formula kit which is a delight to sail in 10-15 knots was on the edge, that normally only happens when the wind goes past 18 knots. and it is a very reliable tell tale. also spoke to a mate today that was beaming after a spinaker run across the bay on sunday. he reckons 20-25 knots wind.

howdy drjukka, i know most of the manly guys really like the gauge there. i think it had a peak gust of 19knots. but based on the fact that the meter is on land i would guess it would read a few knots less than on the water.

all and all it was grerat to get some decent wind strengths.

Hey Justin,

From one Justin to another.

Around midday-2pm was the best wind. It had defintely dropped off by 2.00 pm - sitting at home I alomst bought the warp speed down for spin at 12, but by 2 the wind had dropped.

In a N-NE the weathernow station is pretty close to the true wind. In S it tends to have some 'shadow' effect.

I was running down the bank at Wello and best I could muster speed wise was high 27's - just no grunt in the wind. 15 knots tops by my feeling. In 18 knots I will clock 28's and 29's.

With regard to the weather stations - BNE Airport seems to be in a wind tunnel in N/NE and in a 'hole' in S/SE. Banana Bank and Inner Beacon are too far awy from Manly and Wello to make a good call.

I was measuring 12-14 on my meter at water's edge when I went out.

IMO there was more wind at wello than Manly - but the weed (thicker at Manly) can also make it harder to plane - hence less wind.

yeah, the drop in the wind made me decide to take out the formula gear.

this saturday arvo there is another NE forecast so i was thinking of checking out the other banks near the strip. i've sailed the point talburpin end before in a NE and the wind is usually very strong. i am guessing that the area gets a funnel effect in NE. problem is the wind shadow from the launch at thomsons. i sailed there a few weeks back in a E and had a blast.

there are a couple of very tastey banks and a 1.8NM run further south from the strip.

are you keen? i was hoping to do a run from VP all the way past redland bay. 3 Nm total.

Hi Gestalt,

I think in fairness you copped a 20 min gust which put you back onto dry land, if you'd stayed out then you might have a different story to tell.

Be that as it may, hope I'm not speaking too early when I say that this weekend looks the goods
