Hi

I have been sailing for 1.5 seasons now. I use a 02 carve 99 with an ezzy infinty 6.0 with a 25cm weed fin. I way 80kg. I sail at SB. I can plane water start and use the lines ok. I just have a problem with the rear foot strap. Unless Iam flat out the board tends to sink the tail no matter how gently you drop or how much MFP you put on. As soon as I get a lull i have to drop out or run down wind. has any one had this with older carves ? do I need a bigger fin ? or perhaps a new board with more volume at the rear.

Any advice muchly appreciated

I would guess that you are using very short and wide harness lines, which brings the whole rig really close to you when you are in the straps. This doesn't allow you to respond to luls by ****ing the mast and your weight a little bit forward, plus you clearly rely on the power of the wind and do not take advantage of the board floatation. Using longer lines makes the set 'looser', allowing you to adjust the position of the rig where you have to.
A slightly bigger fin does not sound bad for light wind.
Hope this helps (assuming that you do use short lines )

A more upright fin might help as weed fins dont generate as much lift this might be causing you to go down wind or drop of the plane in lulls

>> Unless Iam flat out the board tends to sink the tail no matter ..

My suggestion would be that if the tail sinks it purely because there's more weight on the tail than the front.

so .. move your weight forward! Lean forward - lean from the hips .. some people only lean their head! If it still sinks then maybe you are pushing on the back of the board with your rear foot?!

Hope you get it sorted .. let us know what works!

Enjoy .. Lozza

raise your boom to eye height or higher.
uncomfortable to start with but lifts your weight off the board by transferring it down your mast and onto the front of the board.

Paddy,

1. Try a bigger fin. A 30-32 would give you plent of lift with this rig configuration - when you are tail walking - change down fin size.

You need to be really 'light' on that back foot. Also try keeping pressure on the toes on your back foot - this can help prevent "railing up"

If you wear booties - ditch them - you cannot feel the board under your feet and the "heel and toe" movement is critical to stop you "railing up" - too much heel pressure will cause you to rail up - point into the wind.

try sailing with your foot Out of the straps just in front of the rear straps central location- you should be able to plane in this position comfortably - but not top speed. I find this foot position will allow you to plane and point high.

Other trick with maintaining a high pointing position is to shift your weight forward (through the shoulders and hips)

Thanks for all the advice guys I have some 30cm standard fins I give them a go if the weed is not to bad. I will ditch the booties as well (watch out for the crabs). I post back on how I went.

From one of the downloaded articles:
The most common mistakes in tuning for footstraps (and in general) are:
Boom too low. Unless you’re under 5’4”, your boom should be in the top half of the
cut-out. The higher boom will help you get further back on the board whilst keeping
your weight on the mast-foot.
Harness lines too far forward. (The back one should be a third of the way down your
boom). If your harness lines are too far forwards they rake the rig back, ruining your
early planing, (check out Intuition’s ‘The Truth About Harness Lines’, Windsurf Mag Jan
2003)

I always put my boom right at the bottom of the cutout, I'll try putting it up a bit now. I also have trouble getting into the footstraps (ie. never made it to them!!), but the pieces of the jigsaw are falling into place.

Nebian,

I followed some of Guy Cribbs tips earlier this year and sent him a thank you note as they were very helpful.
He said that he would be in Perth in December for some coaching and to check his website for updates.
