I am looking at buying my first shortboard. It will have to be a s/hand one up to $500. I am 5'5" and weigh 58kgs - pretty light weight. My present board is a 150L 315cm Fanatic slalom board - great on lighter winds up to 20-22knots and gets increasingly hard to keep in control after that.

Yamseng, you haven't really given us enough info.
What are you thinking of doing with it, ie, wave riding, free style tricks, or just blasting???
If you haven't been sailing that long, you probably don't want to go much under 75 liters, that should still just float you. If you're young, full of enthusiasm and learning quickly you could go for a sinker, if you want radical high wind wave riding.

Hi

On a professional view....advising boards for people on the internet is not a fool proof solution...Decrepit is right...more information is needed...like..
1. waters you intend on sailing in: waves, ocean, lake, etc etc?
2. current skill level, waterstart, footstraps, gybing, etc?
3. wind range you want it for..?
4. age, motivation levels...?

Help yourself, by giving a little more information...and remember don't go too small to soon!

Get to a retailer and see what second hand boards they have and what you can demo....you may be surprised!

Rgds

Sorry, here's a little more myself:
1) I am only interested in blasting around on flat to choppy waters - no waves. I sail in the estuary in Australind.
2) skill level - I am comfortable with harness and footstraps. I can do tacks with 70% success and going into gybes with more agression but still to do one successfully. I still have not been able to do waterstarts. Best I have done so far is a half-way version in chest deep water. Finding it a physical and exhausting struggle to get sail and board in the right position. There is a suggestion that it would be easier on a short board.
3) Wind range - from say 20 to 30 knots. I doubt I will have the balls or skill to sail in any stronger winds. Went out in 25 -30 knots last Sunday on my long board and got hammered.
4) age - biological 53, mentally in denial. Motivation? Just one to go out there and have fun and mix it with the experts.

just my opinion but i would not go to a smaller board untill you can waterstart. if ur presently up hauling what r u gunna do when u can no longer touch the bottom. and no swiming is not the prefered option in this case. It might pay to get a lesson from someone how to waterstart. only then once you have mastered them would i go smaller.
If someone shows u how to waterstart propperly it wont take long, then go for someting of more recent and buy a production board. the newer boards are better for gybing and allround more user friendly.
some flatwater specailists might give a good idea of volume.
if possible try a few boards out b4 u buy.

I'm with Bertie, wait until you can water start consistently before moving to a board that you can't uphaul on....unless you can sail at a spot where you'll always be in chest deep water.
If you've pulled off a water start in chest deep you're almost there, just need more practise. Rather than waiting until you're swimming to practise your water starts, you can practise them in shallow water simply by sitting down instead of doing a normal beach start.
On the other hand there are some pretty good free ride boards around these days in the 120liter category that would work well for you and given your weight you might be able to uphaul at a pinch.

I am in Bunbury too and have a board you can borrow for a week or two to see if a short board will make you water starts easier. It is a 1998 111L RRD Race board, which may still be a little big for the 25+ days, but, at 58kg will give you heaps of planing power in 15-20.

It is very light, 59cm wide, has nice vee for chop out the back and a 40cm Tuttle fin which may be no good for SW days in the shallows, but will rock on those channel runs on a southerly. If you have a 28-30cm tuttle she may be less harsh on your ankles.

The deck has had the odd bit of plastic surgery, so would not worry about hurting her, and sorry, she is not for sale.

Give me a call on 0418 940 088 if you want to have a look/go.

Gettin' gone!!! Seaton

Hi

Yamseng I was in your predicament with water starts a little while ago on a 140 ltr. Reg From WSP suggested I try a Neil Pryde Bouyancy jacket desighned to fit around your harness. This worked a treat up in no time and it made my progresion to a 99 ltr so much easier.

Cheers

Pat

Thank you all for your advice. I will persist with the water starts before looking at a short board and avoid anything on the high side of 20knots. Paddy, I do have a bouyancy jacket and will give it a try. I do re-call Reg at WSP giving same advice. Seaton, appreciate if you will introduce yourself. Just look out for that Chinese fella that has just got off his horse! Once again, many thanks all.
