Now that Harrow has fired up some of those long term storage neurons, (the only ones that are working these days), does anyone remember the length width and volume of the Bombora Antarctica? My first board, and a little ambitious at that. Should never have listened to the friend who recommended it as a first board. Had to buy a Tiga Swift and actually learn how to sail for about 12 months before I ever got back onto the Bombora.

mmmm. Antarctica. I have had to refer to a 1985 Sail Wind Quarterly for this one. 245 x 58. 85 litre and 10.3kg.

Thanks Northboy. Except for being 4kg heavier, it's identical to my Fanatic Freewave 86. Man, nothing's really changed much, has it!

wasn't there a smaller wave board - astro toy or new toy and what were its dimensions? Maybe we should have a wave comp on pre 1985 gear....
cheers

Nah.............get back to the roots of wave sailing.........the old one design windsurfer, stick it out in the hot sun with weights on the nose to get more rocker to get over the waves not through them..
See how the young folk handle one of these big mumma's in the surf with no foot straps.........ahhh and centre board over the shoulder.

They used to have a wave comp on wallys out at Makaha (Long Reef).
Mark Paul and many of the local crew would take on each other and it had to be on a wally and the board was not allowed footstraps.
Should revive that idea.

I still remember the 'Solo Man' on TV heading out through the white wash on his windsurfer original. I guess the moustache helped a lot. What a legend he was.

afraid to admit it, but I still sailed my Antartica up until late last year.

Moved on to a JP freestyle wave 93.

why oh why did I wait so long.

mind you the Ant's still in the shed, so if we ever had a retro classic day, (in Perth) I'll be there.

Are you sure about those dimensions Northboy ? 245cm - that's 8'0", I dind't think any production boards were that short in 1985. I remember it as being longer than that, at least 8'8" or 265cm ??

Holga, the new toy was 7"8 and what a classic, I was 13 at the time and a reasonable sailor and it was still too short for me, what were they thinking?

Ahh Antarctica, my first wave board, Christmas 87, the progression on from the Bombora South Pacific that I used for course racing. Got 2 runs in that day before I landed on a broken bottle in the mud at peli point and spent 4 hours in emergency. 5 anaesthetic injections in my foot and 11 stitches later I went home. Worst thing was I had to wait 6 weeks before I could sail it again.

Holgs you could be right. Good old Sail Wind Quarterly may have a typo. Or gave the dimensions for a New Toy? 265 sounds right. Back in 1984 i built a 7'4" wave board. Might have been the first EVO. Probably should have persisted with it longer.

g , day
I have a new toy near new condition , It measures 245 x 58 , I,d say it,s about 85 ltr , it,s got masses of vee in the tail with a flyer & swallow tail , good plan shape , , a bit before it,s time .
If i could work out how to modify the twin mast track to 1 I would take it out for a blast

Just thinking about both the Trifin i had and the day I upgraded to the Antarctica. What happenned to all those plastic paper weights, is that what is screwing with the climate???

Don't get too nostalgic about the Bombora New Toy.
A 6mm thick 'rope universal' came standard with the set-up.
That was a disconnection just waiting to happen after 10 gybes.
Dumb.

Ahh, the rope universal. Two things you could count on with the rope universal.

1. You knew a new one wasn't going to fail unexpectedly.
2. You knew it would fail in the not too distant future.

I remember always carrying spare length of rope in my harness pocket.

And who can still remember the knot to tie the rope uni/downhaul? Thank God someone eventually invented rubber.

It's been a while since I logged a post, but have reading the forums feverishly for a while now.

I agree with Rik - the New Toy is 245cm, or as I recall, the formal published dimension was 244cm - either way, that's not 7'8".

The Antarctica is 268cm.

My little bro' had a second hand New Toy back in about '87, and I always wanted an Antarctica but had to settle for an early 80's galss board with the raised ridge along the centreline of the deck. Even before the Tri-fin, Bombora put out a production model like that.
