i think mine is 4mm,

but i usually shop by breaking strain.

this is the norm www.whitworths.com.au/rpe-16plt-poly-blk-4?q=182330

i try and get more between 3/4 - 1 ton.

Trouble is, thicker the rope, the more resistance thru the pulleys, takes a lot more effort to downhaul with 5mm rope than it does with 3mm.
And of course the thinner the rope the quicker it breaks/wears out.
4mm isn't a bad compromise, but make sure it's good quality stuff, breaking strain isn't the whole story, resistance to wear is also a big factor, after all how would you like to be jammned in a cleat repeatedly??

Hey Decrepit,

How long does your typical downhaul rope last, if it's being cleated in much the same position each time?

Bit to tell by me, my sails stay rigged, so each sail has it's own downhaul rope, about a year for the 5.3, that gets used the most, up to 2 years for the 4.7, and maybe 5 years for the 4.3. I forget when I last changed that. Lets face it, I forget when I last used it!!!!

I've started using 4mm spectre core, the stuff last longer then anything else i've used b4 but you have to do a good cut on the end otherwise its to hard thread in the pulleys but once thread it does run smoothley
