I am just getting back into windsurfing and would like opinions on gaps between sails.

I am about 95kg, got a 114L Fanatic Eagle and a 7.6 as the big gear. Thinking about 6.5-6.6 as the next sail down.

Also have a 90L JP.

Keen to try my hand at slalom.

Thoughts on the next sail size after that?

if you are in brisbane and sailing mainly slalom then

at your weight 6.6 would be a perfect next size down size. after that the next size down for you may be a 5.3 you probably won't use any smaller than that unless you are going in the surf. and for sure the smallest you will ever use around here would be a 4.7 and you may only pull it out every 7 years.

I am in Bris and already have a 5.3.

My thoughts on wind range for the sails was
7.6 planing to 18
6.5 18 - 25
6.0 22+
This is what i thought if for racing. I have the 5.3 but it is for the stuff around days of 25+ that are few and far between, But maybe this weekend

cool,

i think 6.5 to 6m is a bit close together. 6.5 to 5.8 would be nicer. then you can use the 5.3 when it is howling next feb/march

edit....

thought i would also say, that if you are going to start racing in the new series then you may need a bigger board. knowing what the other guys are on and due to your body weight you may need a 125lt wide board as well. for when it is marginal. it depends on what wind limit will be set at each meet.

it is not totally necessary but would help due to our light winds. maybe something for down the track. therte is nothing more frustrating then watching everyone scream off into the distance on bigger sails and boards.

I'm a bit (fair) heavier at 120kg, running the following gear;

161ltr 80cm wide with 8.1mtr sail in 15-20knts

for 20+ ints use 6.6mtr with 130ltr 65cm wide board

in sub 15knts using 9 - 10.5 mtr sail on the 161ltr board

jc,

I run various boards from 75-105L

My weight runs between 86-90 kg (winter)

Sail size for me, 7.0 12-16 knots
6.0

I sail in Brisbane

to continue

7.0 - 12-20 knots
6.0 16-26 knots
5.7 16 - 32 knots
4.7 22 - 43 knots.

Above 43 knots I cannot stay on the water with my kit. At this point it is the board, not the sail that I cannot handle.

I probably use my 4.7 6-10 times per year (tops)

I have 4.0 that I never use - the big issue for me is board control in the short chop.

With modern sail design, you can probably go straight from a 7.5 (fully downhauled) to 6.0 (a bit loose)

Hello fellow wello sailer great to see your getting back into it JC.
I agree with Gestalt on the sail sizes 7.6,6.5,5.8.
I don't think the boards the prob for you maybe a bigger sail would benefit more, as long as you can comfortably float on the board you should be ok.
