Hello. First post here.
I have a HotSails SpeedXP 7.0 that I use on Lake Huron. It has been great so far, just have two small problesm with it.
First, I would like to know how to tighten up the leech near the top of the sail. I down haul quite a bit (I think) and still can't get the leech tight, it's always wavy. I tighten the top battens alot too.
Secondly, It also has a small 6" clean cut through the clear part with the X pattern. I have duct tape on this now, what is a better fix?
Thanks,
Tommy

welcome aboard tommyeflight

You're doing everything right already tommy, the leech should be wavy above the top few battons on modern sails. It's all about getting the sail to twist and air to expel from the sail. Lot's of downhaul also locks in your 'center of effort' nice and low and keeps the sail stable in gusts. No doubt one of the senior forum guru's will go into more detail , in the meantime just google it.

note: the more downhaul you pull on, the 'wavier' the upper leech will become!

Duct tape is fine for repairs, you may like to also use scotchtape with is clear and bonds well.

G'Day Tommy,
Is that the Lake Huron that's near Lake Michigan???

knot board is correct, loose leach isn't a problem, that's how it's meant to be.
The stronger the wind the looser you should have it.

Thanks for the help guys. I just figured the leech should be tight-but it makes sense now. Looking at pictures of sails while sailing there is a distinct twist towards the top.
And yes, Lake Huron is part of the Great Lakes in Canada/US. We have a cottage on it and on the best days we get 25kt+ winds and huge 6ft swells in the open water. I think of it as freshwater ocean.

If you're very underpowered and haven't got a bigger sail you can tighten the leach and increase draft a tad by [u]reducing[/] downhaul, and outhaul.
But there's a price to pay if you go too far, the sail will feel heavy, fin will tend to spin out, won't handle gusts as well, (there will be an increased chance of getting catapulted when they hit)
