Having problems getting my sail battens to flip over when gybing/going about, have tried a few things (different down haul tensions etc) with no luck so far. Sail is a no cam 7.6 Tush Max. I'm sure it's something simple I'm not doing right but it's got me stuffed, any clues??
Either the mast is to stiff or you haven't tried enough downhall, It's usually the not enough downhall. Go to the shop buy some weeties, one bowl full should be enough then crank on the downhall
If you can release some of the tension in the lines that push on the batten then that might help (some sails have little black plastic adjuster thingies).
Also for more downhaul tie a loop in the end of the downhaul rope, slide a hammer or shifter in there, grab with both hands, one foot on the mast foot and pull like b*ggery...
Most problems happen because people simply DO NOT DOWNHAUL ENOUGH. The sail sould be flat where the third batten from the top meets the mast. Do not over-outhaul, the sail should be just about touching the boom at it's max depth. If your problem is still the same, maybee you should switch to a better sail brand.
Thanks all for your comments, I've had enough downhaul on this thing to have the leach loose down to the clew, at this point the sail is so underpowered I may as well have a correctly trimmed 6.0 up. Do not have any such problems with my other sails...
I had this problem with a storm 5.0 I tried about 10 different masts and it still would not flip cleany on the bottom batten, no matter what down haul and outhaul was put on the sail. Ended getting a north sail to replace it.
Hi Sean Are you able to bring the sail in to us to have a look at it for you? The Maxx is quite an old sail now and the new sails have changed a fair bit in the way they set. It is hard to offer specific advise without seeing the sail set up and on what components you are using. Masts still vary a lot and some sails just won't set on some masts. Most of the time it is not enough downhaul, but there are times when the leach twists off to the clew and the battens still poke under the mast due to the curve of the mast. Maybe yo could email us some photos of the sail rigged.
Hi Jez, yeh I know the maxx is getting on a bit but it's still in good nik and I'm loathed to get something else until I've exhausted all avenues. I'm going to give it a shot this arvo with yet another mast and see how I get on, if that doesn't work I'll bring it in.
