I've just gotten a quote for some sail numbers. $96 for three sails, and that's only one-sided! Are they kidding or what?

Does anyone know what else can be substituted instead? I've tried book contact but the glue isn't waterproof.
Dark window tint maybe? Can you buy the vinyl uncut?

Thinking about going the super-light option (permanent marker) [}:)]

Many sign places charge $10 a number so 12 numbers is about $120 per sail however depending on the number 1 side is suffience.

Tip, Get two tone numbers you will pay a bit more but they look great.

Packaging tape.. 3m make it in 6 different colours plus the standard brown, and it stays on really well provided you clean the sail before applying it - use some decent window cleaner, or meths on a lint free cloth. For a bubble free application, spray a mist of water onto the sail first, and then you can position your number and squeegee the water out. (like window tint on a car)

Making the numbers is pretty easy - just stick tape to a piece of clean flat glass, and cut them out with a sharp pointed knife. You can peel the tape off the glass easily and transfer it to your sail.

Duct tape works well too, but doesn't come in as many pretty colours. It is solid colour though rather than being slightly translucent like the packaging tape.

Tape has the added bonus that when you poke a hole in your sail, you already have some tape handy that you can re-position!!

Most sailmakers (maybe good marine shops too) stock a self-adhesive sailcloth it's on a 1.5 m wide roll and from memory about $25 / m you can get all different colours. I've also used it to replace entire panels of decaying monofilm.

Just what board crazy above has already said!

The proper vinyl is called Avery 7 series vinyl. It is 600mm wide by 1 metre lenths unless buying in bulk. Cost is around $15.00 per metre from a graphic artist I know.

By the way $96.00 for 3 sails if you are doing 3 letters and 3 numbers is really cheap. My guy will charge you $55.00 per sail. It takes about 2-3 hours for them to set the graphic on the computer, cut apply application tape.

I would pay for the stickers to be cut personally, but then I can't be bothered sitting and cutting out stickers.

Let me know if you want some vinyl ASAP - i will get it to board crazy by wednesday if interested.

You will need 2-3 metres.

Hi

I use book cover contact you get from Woolies or newsagents. It is easy to put on and peels off leaving no residue. I use my PC to print an outline on a sheet of paper of each character and use this as a template to draw the character onto the contact.

You can get colours and use any font you want. Just take your time when you stick it on the sails.

I pinched my daughters school book contact and it works fine.
Pretty exxy though at $4 a roll that will do about 10 sails one sided
Made some templates from thin cardboard, trace, cut out and stick.
Most sail cloth retailers or sail companies have an array of different size templates you could use. I know Bainbridge here in Sydney have them.
Cheers

For competition the letters have to be a certain font and height depending on who is running the comps.
