Windsurfing hats are great, they keep the sun off your head and your sunnies in place all the time. There made of quick dry material and keep their form when wet. The one to get will have a plastic clip under the chin.
Most of the windsurfing shops in Perth have them and you can see them on the net at surfsailaustralia where I got mine.
3 seasons with one and I've only lost one pair of sunnies despite numerous catapults and stacks.
Yeah my mate and I both have the FCS hat from surfsailaustralia.com.au , You get used to them before long and don't realise they are there. They have a neo strap and are of light material, only come off a couple of times with those really good stacks but wasn't a drama. Really good for the head if you are thinning a bit on type like me also cuts down direct sun on the face, its a must on those sunny days.
The Phil Mcgain hats are great - highly recommended. The one I have is on its 3rd or 4th season and still going strong. It clips on under your chin and its never come of even in the biggest wipeouts. I use it now mainly for criuising light wind these days as my gath hat has replaced it for the stronger days, but I have used it up to 30knts without proplems. keeps your melon from geting fried-Great for the folliclely challenged.
Agree, the Team hats are good. Its come off a few times in big stacks but floats. With the neoprene lining they are very comfortable and do help with sun on your face. The FCS ones are just as good and most big surf brands have one these days. Maui tested too which is a **** I know but stayed on in some wicked wind.
I use hats from army disposals - bush hats are good, use desert hats if you want a wider brim. They come with a strap (if not, just sew one on). I just knot it so it fits comfortably under my chin and can be removed without untying, then when you go sailing, the trick is to tuck it BEHIND your ears. It seldom, if ever, comes off.
I used to use a bandana. Too much time sailing etc in my youth means I get sun spots developing easily now - particularly within my hair line. Worked well and didn't come off too easily - does anyone use them now and can you get SPF50 bandana's?
I am sure Billabong and O'Neal make those types of hats too. I was down at Torquay at the surf shops during the week and I am sure I saw them down there then. Just about any surf shop would have them.
2 vids below from last Tuesday at Sandy Pt, Slowboat is wearing an FCS hat on these runs around 43 knots, think he may of had it on all day, so would make it the fastest windsurfing hat in the world.
I hate sailing with hats aswell as my brother and dad. When ever we got wet, the front would flap down and cover the eyes. I ran into a paddel steemer once, it was standing still though. Prefer to just slap the sun burn cream on really thick. However my dads at that troubled stage now where the hair on the top of his head is to thick to put sumburn cream there, but way to thin to protect him from the sun, so he gets a burt top which is no good. His starting to ware hats again now.
I have no hair in the middle of my head(no I'm not a monk) so I use the Hamilton spray on suncreen 30 +. I never get a burnt head, and it's a pump spray for all the greenies.

I wear a Gath hat. One of the newer ones without the sides. You don't even know it is there. Keeps the sun off my thinning bonce. The face isn't shaded too well, but I slip surfing sun screen on as well.
I always wear sunnies even when it is stormy (Keeps the rain out of your eyes if you are caught in it.) and haven't lost a pair yet. The Gath also gives the bonce good protection.
You can slip the ear covers on if it is cold and they protect your ears.
