Hi, I may be visiting Safety Bay soon and plan to have a sail there. I was told there is a lot weed in the water. Is this just in the area where the rental gear is or is it clearer a little further south. Ie. Near Waikiki. I have been swimming near Waikiki and didn't see a lot of weed in the water there.

I've only been there a few times, but weed fins are a must.

There's heaps of kelp-beds that are perfect for planing over the top of. Just. I suspect they would slow you down a bit without a weed-fin.

I can't honestly say what the weed looked like, as the weed fin took care of it.

Nothing worse than assembling a salad and towing it round the bay on your fin

The first time I went down there I did not encounter one bit of weed and wondered what all the noise was about. The second time I couldn't go 15mtrs without having to get the dam stuff off my standard fin. So I got a weed fin.

Apparently the weed is seasonal, so it may not have started yet. It is a bit like pieces of 8-track cassette tape, or if you are not that old, like wide cassette tape.

Yep a weedy is ideal for safety bay, they get ribon weed which can float in bands on the surface, once you get the weedy no probs at all and performance diference is minimal.
