Hi there,

I've just moved out from the UK and the missus and I are living at Mona Vale, northern beaches of Sydney.

I've been having a bit of trouble finding a good place to get on the water, any advice much appreciated!

Another thing that would be useful is a wind report site for this part of the world - anyone got a link?

Loving the conditions here already - sailing in water that doesn't give you frostbite is a revelation.

Cheers!

Lou

Lou,

Having also recently moved here from the UK I am also loving the weather/lifestyle.

On the Northern Beaches:
I sail up at Pittwater/Palm Beach where the sea plane lands. Before heading out just make sure that you ask someone where the runway is ;). I am heading off there in a couple of moments cause the forecast on this site (click on Graphs above) says the wind should be picking up to around 10 - 15 knots NE later today)

People also sail at Narrabeen, however I find that it is very gusty and the colour of the water scares me.

On the way up to Palm Beach/Pittwater, you will pass a place called Long Reef. This is where a lot of the locals wavesail. Mu fitness levels are something to be desired so have not yet gone out into the ocean. There is also a windsurf shop here (Wind, Surf and Snow) so if you need to rent/buy gear they can help you out..

See you on the water

Cheers,
Rob

Cheers,

We already tried up at Palm beach, watching the seaplane take off was impressive and I'm glad I wasn't in his way :) Missus not too keen because of the muddy/weedy surface.

Also just come back from the lagoon at narabeen, found the water to be OK, a bit silty/muddy but not bad. Some of the sailors there today were really ripping along - something to aspire to once I improve.

Cheers!

Anybody know of places that are close to Sydney that do lessons and rent gear?

Thinking of getting away this weekend but as I don't have a board yet would need to rent. Tried phoning about the courses at Winda Woppa but they're full...

Thanks,

Lou

Ask Wind Surf n' Snow. They're the only shop on the north side.
They're next to Long Reef Golf Course at Collaroy. (left turn just before the golf course/tennis courts when heading south on Pittwater rd)

Hi Lou.
My first choice would be with the Winda Woppa (sailboard safari's) crowd - if that fails try Lachlan (Warrens Brother) he gives privately arranged lessons in Narrabeen Lake, arrange through Warren (sailboard safari's www.sailboardingsafaris.com )
There is another place about 3.5hrs drive north of Sydney Called Pacific Palms Windsurfing on Wallis lake just before Forster (easy drive). They have all the latest gear for learning and hire.
Call Chris or Gabe Ph. 02 65542424 mob 0419 410 216 or email [email protected] (i hope he dosn't get attacked with spam now).
Can Highly recommend - from Advanced to beginer.
They also offer weekend pakages including lessons accomodation and rigged gear on the beach - ask them when you call.
Cheers

Hi Lou

Sorry we didn't have any places for you..it has been a busy season at Winda Woppa...

If you would like a lesson this weekend, call Sam at Wind surf n snow and he will get Lachlan organised, or we will be back in Sydney for the following weekend for lessons.....as this is our last weekend in sydney..then we return to Fiji for our winter program. Hope that helps....

Rgds

I wonder how much trouble I'll have selling the idea of Fiji to the wife. Actually as I'm writing this I can hear the rustle of bikinis into suitcases ;)

Thers loads of good spots.

Try longreef, just over the hill after the pie shop turn left.

Monavale its self can be good.

Palm beach can be good and if its too big or not such a good direction then just cross the road and go slalom sailing on the other side.

You could always go to woy-woy, its a bit of a drive but ocean beach can be brilliant in a N/E wind.

In a north easterly almost all beaches are off shore so try narabean lake, ok its a lake, but at least you can sail.
