Any tips on sailing Williamstown? ... spots to rig, best wind directions, any good speed conditions, tips to avoid cargo ships ...
FYI, I'm in the process of moving there in 3 weeks.
Cheers,

In short, don't. Better to head to Altona in a southerly. I'm not aware of any launch sites- too much rock and reef. Sailing out from the yacht clubs is flukey, although it's not a bad blast across Hobson's Bay to St Kilda.
As for cargo ships, power doesn't give way to sail! And the buggers throw a wind shadow for probably more than a km.

I wouldn't say "dont sail there" as there are two spots where speedsailing is a possibility - with one of them being kind of safe if you break something. However as Mikey said, both suffer from rocks - and the water is quite grimey/brown. I personally dont bother speedsailing there as it just too much like hard work...
Bay sailing can be had at the Williamstown Esplanade, just off the sand there in the half-moon bay - works from SW to S direction, although it can get quite rough and a little too onshore.
If you dont mind a drive over the bridge, you can go out at St Kilda (just near the kites) where it works from W to SE - and the swell pushes you onshore if you break anything.
