Are there any particular sails (freeride) that cater for guys 6'2" and up? I know I'm not the tallest guy around, but I'm starting to find the sails I have aren't comfortable, and seem to be designed for under 6' w/surfers, especially my wave sail, (don't ask why I have one, I can't wave-sail...yet).

I set my boom fairly high (eye level), but find that when planing, and the sail's set, the harness-lines are too low, due to the boom being so low at the clew-end. I've got adjustable lines, but like the flexibility of longer lines, the only way I can see that the sail can suit, is to raise the clew, I generally have the boom set on the mast near the top of the luff 'cutout'.

Are there sails with a higher clews? Or do I have to work on technique?

Hi Sailhack,

I think this is a combination of technique and getting the right type of sail.

I am 6'4" myself and find that the boom is reaching the upper limit with quite a few sail brands. In addition I am often just making the "safe zone" on the mast.

Here is what I am using: NP Zone/ Alpha + 24inch harness lines. I usually attach the boom at shoulder height but adjust it depending on wind (higher for more wind, lower for wave riding).

Have you thought about a "power" wave sail instead of a freeride sail? These sails are often available in size up to 6.2ish. I think given your height a Neil Pryde/ Gun or similar could work. See if you local shop has a demo sail and try it out. If you need something bigger try something like a Neil Pryde Expression.

My recommendation would be to stay away from brands were the team riders are primarily short teens/ tweens. The team riders are usually involved in the product development which means they will to some extend influnce the final product. I have experienced this a few times with both boards and sails which do wonders for other guys (notably shorter and lighter) which do nothing for me.

Buggered if I know master Hack, I'm 6'1" use 24" lines & seat harness with a 6.6 Ezzy Infinity and no Prob.

My mate is 8', kidding but he is bloody tall. He only owns wave sails and I'm sure he has 24" lines too & a waist harness. He borrowed a 6.4 freeride the other day with no probs.

I'm guessing technique, but someone smarter will give you the drum

Thanks guys,

Maybe a seat harness would be the go, although I was told to stick with the waist, for ease of learning. I'll give the 'power' wave sail a look. The problem here is that there's only a handful of windsurfers, the ones that still sail are all under 6'.

I did notice that the harness 'rides' up, obviously not the best, but my issue is based more on the 'slope' (angle) back of the boom, and grip technique.

Thanks again.

Yeah, thanks nebbian, I was wondering about that...

I was watching another guy yesterday, he tends to lean out alot more than me, (a better windsurfer, obviously) I do feel like I'm too upright, and facing forward, and tend to get catapulted fairly often, the upside is that I've nailed my waterstarts.

Sailhack, I'm 6'1" and run 28" harness lines - no problems. The boom is at shoulder height which usually ends up about 2" below the top of the cut out...

I'm guessing it must be a technique issue.

Try a seat harness, I started with a seat, tried a well known brand waist and it was a pain in the coit to use, ended up under armpits all the time. Maybe it wasn't designed for my shape
Give one a try, you got zilch too loose.

Still reckon your Avatar is s..t hot

Take a look at Guy Cribb's tips: www.guycribb.com/windsurfing_technique_holiday_DVD_0076v01.htm

scroll down the page a bit and there are a number of documents on Stance.

Personally, I don't agree with everything he says, but it's a good start.
