The board has been in for nose surgery this week and I've been torturing myself watching everyone else having a blast down at Scarborough. I took a few photos yesterday and they're posted at http://members.iinet.com.au/~benandjac/public/scarb_beach/ if anyone wants to take a look - there might be one of you there!

You would never believe it but the pics are from a compact digital camera. It's an Olympus u725SW, 7.1 Megapixels and waterproof to 5m without a casing. I take it everywhere because it's tiny and fits in my pocket. I have some pretty nice film cameras but they're big and heavy and scared of water so this one is what I take all my shots on.

The picture size is quite small (average 100k) so I assume you weren't using the best quality on yr camera?

I took the pictures on high quality but then resized them (after a quick touch up) to around 640x480 for uploading to the website. I don't have the originals at work to check the size but they are much bigger than these.
I'm happy to upload the full size pics if anyone wants to download them, just post the name of the image and I'll upload them when I get home tonight.

Ok cool. Yeah my sony is 7.1 mp but the resulting images are really big i.e 5mb + so too big for web and email.

I'm thinking of getting one of those cameras - is the quality good? Worth buying?

It would be my only digi camera...

Yeah the quality is fantastic. They are stainless steel and bullet proof, and the photo quality is great for a compact camera. I definitely recommend it.

I've got the Pentax Optio WP, same deal, 5Megapixel, stainless housing, waterproof to a couple of metres, takes a good shot. Only thing is the video isn't that great if you're zoomed in, but hey everything else is great

Hey Zed,
Once you download your pictures to your computer, open them up in an image editing program, crop them so you get only the bits you want, and then resize them to be something more like 800 x 600. This reduces the file size so you can email them or stick them on the web.

I got the camera from Plaza Cameras in Perth, but most camera shops would have them. With a 512MB memory card it set me back about $650.
