I currently have a 4.7. and 5.5m sail and given that I'm 6'4" and 85kg-ish I figured a bigger sail would be useful. What size would everyone recommend, my current thinking is around a 7.5m as I would like to be able to get out in 15ish knots. Thoughts?

Assuming you are talking a 90-100L freeride type board and sails, (which would probably suit those sails). No good getting a bigger sail without a bigger board. If your current board is less than around 110L, you won't get much advantage, and I am guessing that for your weight, 120L+ would be better.

And you will also need a bigger fin.

Knowing your board situation is critical for an objective opinion. A 2m jump in sail size is big and likely will not make sense regardless of the board or boards you have. However, if you want to plane in 15 knots with a 7.5, you will need a somewhat wide board between 115 and 130 liters. The type of board will also make a difference. A 6.5 sail is probably the most common sail size for intermediates covering 15 knots for lightweights to 20+ knots for heavyweights.

If you like the gap between 4.7 and 5.5 the next size with the same gap is 6.4.

My board is currently at the girlfriends place so once I go grab it I'll be able to confirm what it is. I believe it is a 110-120l board but I'm not sure. When i get home I'll also measure the fin.

Sounds like maybe a 6.4 would be the way to go.

6.0-6.5 will get a lot of use in Melb if you have a big enough board.

You can jump 1.5-2 meters . Even use an RDM 460, so no need for an SDM extension (I presume yours is RDM).

Just gave that article a read, very useful information!

I do have an RDM, i believe 430. Will probably have to get a bigger mast with a sail upgrade.

Severne Turbo 7.0 rigs on a 430 rdm

Also: www.windsurf.co.uk/all-a-quiver/

17-18 knots is the magic number - can still hold onto big sails, but can already get going on small ones.

I have a 5.3 blade pro. My next size up is a 6.5m severne turbo.

On a 105l board.

Im 73kg

that gap works perfect for me because the turbo has a cam. It can handle 25knots in the bay. Bloody fast. But I can also get it planning in 15 knots.

Given you are bigger than me, get a 7.0 turbo

So turns out the board isa~140L Fanatic Bee. Didn't realise it was that big, could be a bit rough out in the chop. Shouldn't have any issues with a bigger sail. Got me thinking though, maybe I should be thinking about a new board before more sails. Maybe a 105ish freeride or something. Thoughts?

If your going bigger in sails you should also think about the fins you run. Also have a look at what your mast and boom can support, miight help with your decision unless you are happy to add to these as well.

You could use a 8.0 sail on that ...
but yes ...look for a smaller board ..105-115 ..but keep that Bee for your big sails ..
And a good 7.0 .-7.5 ..no cams are easier to use ...

True, but he got a 5.5 to jumped to. Depend what is your level, if you are a very good sailor you can go in freerace board and sail and you will be able to reach the gap with just a 7.0 or even a 7.5. I'm 68 kg and I pass from a 7.8 Slalom sail and a 107L slalom board to 5.3 powerfull sail and a 100L freestyle easily. With a no cam, that would be a bit harder and a 7.0 max I guess? Easier to handle and rig also(no cam).
