I've got a 2003 84 litre JP FSW, and have the opportunity to upgrade it to a 2006 78 litre JP FSW for a modest cost.

(My light wind board is a 105 litre Tabou Rocket).

The 2003 84L is 252 x 57cm and the 2006 78L is 237 x 57.5cm. I figure the 78 litre is going to plane in just about the same wind, due to the increased width of the later models, but I'll get to enjoy a shorter board. I only weigh 66kg.

So, should I bother with the upgrade???

I generally use 4.3m up to 5.7m sails on the FSW, using my bigger board for larger sails. I sail flatwater 95% of the time, and only go out in small waves.

Thanks,
Harrow.

yep defo, or get something even smaller if this is going to be your high wind board ... maybe something around the 65 - 70l mark.

If you have the money, go for it, if things are tight I wouldn't bother, we can get caught up in the equipment thingo too much, but if money no probs, why not, I'm a convert to the shorther wider concept!

84l JP FSW is a cracker of a board... it may be a tad on the large side for you in good winds (even with it's pinny little tail)... Are you really 66 kg I am so JEALOUS[}:)]

I reckon go for it if you have the dosh... The 78l JP may also be a better match to your 4.3...

...Then get a wave board with volume around your body weight - for waves waves waves and more waves

Pugs,

Yeah, everyone who sees my 2003 84 litre raves about them, especially given mine is almost like new. This is why I am a little hesitant to make the switch. I know you are a FSW fan and have had a few. Can you see any downside to swapping over?

Regards,
Harrow.

P.S. Yeah, I am 66kg. Used to be 65kg, but put on 1kg over Christmas.

Downsides... the cost... AND, what if it isn't as good

For flat water blasting, the pinny tail and the long flat section from the back of the board is what gives the 84 its speed. Have a look at the 78l (ride it if you can) and see how this compares. The lessar volume should be a little more comfy through the chop.

I know a lighter guy over here that swapped from an 04 84l FSW to an 06 78l FSW, he liked the 84l, but loved the 78l...

Cheers Pugs
