I'm facing a shoulder arthroscopy to repair multiple tears in the tendons and the labrum.

I was wondering whether anyone has been through the surgery and can comment on the recovery process - how long before you could get back on the water?
Was there a further period before you felt full strength return?

I've been living with this for about a year so am planning on windsurfing until the surgery comes around in 3 months or so, unless someone who has been through it suggest that's a really dumb idea.

Thanks for any advice

Recovered from minor labral tear and frozen shoulder with rest and exercise. When I was getting info on recovering from possible surgery I was told 4-6 months and be back playing rugby (not that I play rugby, but it shows how well you can expect to heal up).

I was told 8 weeks recovery after a knee arthroscopy for a torn acl. By the time i had the op done the injury was 2 months old. I was back surfing 7 days later. My knee is still week as piss though and that was 8 years ago.

completely different injury but the arthroscopy was fairly painless almost the next day.

G'day, I had a shoulder reco due to multiple dislocations when I was 20. (I'm now 31). The surgery was well worth while as it hasnt popped out since, but it does get tired quicker than it used to, or maybe it's because I'm older now?
Recovery for me was about 3 months before I could flatwater sail, and ocean sailing was about 6.
I started aqua therapy straight away with light movements for about 2 weeks and then doggie paddling followed by breast stroke. (mmmm stroking breasts!)
I reckon I had 95% strength by 1 year but It's never going to be 100% again. Once your joints are buggered there buggered for life.

Thanks everyone for relating your experiences. Some good advice there. Seems I have to allow a minimum of a couple of months off the water.

Had a posterior dislocation from a bad back loop stack about 15 years ago which resulted in a reco. I was pretty slack with the post op physio so I still don't have full flexibility. I had the op in September and was back in the water after 5 to 6 months. You won't do anymore damage by continuing to sail until the op just make sure you're fanatical about the physio afterwards.

Think that was the opp I had about 10 years ago. I couldnt raise my right arm above shoulder height without assistance.

It is about 98% now and it took 7 weeks to get there.Within 2 weeks I was able to do most anything ,but carefully and slowly. ie While gardening I snapped a twig a bit thicker than a pencil and the pain dropped me to my knees.

Very happy with the outcome. 7 weeks to get your arm back is worth the wait!!!!
I would wait till the season ends as well but you will be pissed off you didnt do it 2 months before the season began. (I put up with it for over 2 years)
