Those shots of Sandy Point look like a dream. Where can I go in Sydney and sail smooth water in high winds. It may be 'fun' to contend with the chop on Botany Bay, but I'd like to have a go at the smooth stuff. Maybe Swan Lake at Sussex Inlet? (Yeah, it's not in Sydney, but family has a house there.)

Foreshore Drive In Botany, the other Airport runway will give you relatively smooth water in a westerly. You sail right along side it and then keep bearing away down wind (otherwise you hit the wall). It's not quite Sandy point but you can get a reasonable 32+ knot run. But don't fall in, it can be pretty grotty on that side.

i read somewhere on another forum about someone wanting to the rowing course at Penrith. Probably have to go thru so much red tape crap!!
kurnell in a souherly is unreal. dead offshore and smooth water. Its been a few years since Ive sailed there. Its pretty shallow and not super long runs like Sandy pt but still flat as!!!!!!

I don't know why Sydney Airport is so choppy in NE? Shouldn't it be protected by the runway? Or was I just there on strong day?

Depends whay you call 'under' the runway. Get right up there, alongside the buoys which prevent boats nudging up the the runway. Just surface ripples, and if the wind is right, you can run from the mouth of the Cooks river down to the tip of the runway, overtaking powerboats along the way!! (sneak up in their wake for even smother water, then pull out at the last minute and blast past, watching for the look on their face!!)
