I got to thinking the other day, got a headache, took a couple of panadol and said stuff that for a joke so i went out and had a sail.

Whilst out there I was watching all the gun sailers hammering along jumping, jibing a lot of whom would watch me bobing around in the water undertaking the most dificult of manoeuvres the "Splat Jibe".

Now with my vast knowledge of windsurfing (thanks Hardie for the enlightenment). I have come to realise that all these people executing these hiotee tiotee moves are taking the easy way out.

At the end of the day almost anyone can do a version of a "DRY JIBE". Just have a look out during your next session and look at the ratio's of people doing dry jibes to Splat jibes!!

Why, I hear you ask

Because "Dry Jibing" is the soft option

The most difficult "Splat Jibe" requires a multitude of skills and disciplines to be applied for the manoeuvre to be completed successfully.

  • Coordination you must be able to change direction, flip the sail, shuffle your feet and find and easy and safe flight path

  • Acrobatic skills and Style The more experienced Splatter will incorperate, loops rolls and twists into their manoeuvre (just try that on your next jibe)

  • Swimming The bigger the move the longer the swim.

  • Water Ballet Getting the sail and board into position.

  • Water Starting The more experienced Splatter's water starts are that refined that they can give the impression of bouncing of the water. Have a look next time at how shaky in comparrison other jibing techniques make water starts

  • Muscle Development Wave Sailing Spaltters naturally develop stronger sphincter muscles, this is from when jibing in the impact zone and seeing the next set wave zeroing in naturaly makes you want to "clench".

Remember how complex and difficult this manoeuvre

Also remember that your skills are such that you can only rarely undertake this most difficult of jibes.

So if you are a dry jiber, next time you are out in the water taking the soft option, don't play out on the Hard Core "Splatt Jibers", just offer

RESPECT

Enjoy the water no matter how you use it.

Elmo,

There I was thinking that my dry gybes were

Now that you have enlightened me, Rather than have a quiet chuckle to myself, I will have new respect, and I will begin emulate copy your theatrical and highly technical Splat Gybe manouvres.

This task should not be too difficult as I get to see so many of your splats, that they are now inbedded in my long term memory

I think I'm going to struggle with the one foot in the strap, the other foot barefoot skiing, one hand on the mast, the other imitating the rotor blade of a helicopter, the forward loop followed by a twist, and the next moment I look somehow you have re-water started

I MYSELF HAVE ALSO JUST PERFECTED THE ONE FOOTED BACKHANDED UPSIDE DOWN SPLAT JIBE. YOU HAVE NO IDEA HOW MUCH PRACTICE IT TAKES.
SO ON THE WEEKEND I MOVED ON TO THE DRY JIBE. HOW SCHIT BORING IS THAT.
NO ONE FOOT
NO UPSIDE DOWN
NO FALL DOWN
NO SPLAT!!!
JUST TURN AROUND AND KEEP SAILING. CRAPOLA.
I WILL STILL DABBLE OCCASIONALLY IN THIS "DRY JIBE" THING,
BUT I'M SURE I'VE GOT PLENTY & PLENTY & PLENTY OF SPLAT JIBES TO COME

RESPEK TO ALL FELLOW SPLATTERS

see you go to jibe and everyone thinks oh just another boring dry jibe. but then hold on whats this.. he is dancing on the board.. he is doing a 1 footed jibe,, now he has changed food.. oh look no hands.. now one hand, now two hands, now one hand again. OMG excitment overload.. is this not just the best jibing technique ever..
