A point of my recent social discusions have been trying to classify what is a sport and what is a hobby. A fine line between the two. Hence I classify my passion for windsurfing as both of these just to make it easy. A sport - as obviously it involves considerable physical activity and a hobby - as I spen copius amounts of time reading articles, looking at sites like this one, buying the associated gear; and keeping up to date with technology.

The problem with this hobbie is that I purchase magazines based on my hobbie. Whenever I am in a shopping centre I make a deliberate bee-line to the newsagent to check out the latest magazines. Undoubtedly my favourite being the "Freesail" magazine. The problem is that time and time again I am disappointed not to find it on the shelves anymore. Truly this is the best of the magazines as it is local and features articles based on people we sail with, places we sail at and gear that we sail with (not a big fan of the dry suit). Occasionally I will get desperate and spend the $12 - $14 on a UK or US mag. Surely we have a windsurfing population to support this magazine or have the publishers just given up on the concept. Admittedly it wasnt frequently published and I would have prefered a weekly subscription, but given we have some of the best windsurfing conditions in the world what is going on???

I have the same problems as you, although I can't afford to be purchasing mags every week. Every time I think of it, I trundle into my newsagent (a very large one) and tend to find a different mag every time (if there are any there at all). The first one I brought was Freesail, but I quite honestly found this a bit weightless.

The next one was a UK issue, which had a bit more meat, but you are right, I only have a passing interest in speed trials on some lake a zillien miles away. But it did have some interesting articles on technique, which is what I am really looking for.

I brought a US publication after that, which I actually thought was an Aussie pub when I brought it. This had a fair amount of meat and some technique articles, but again, I don't want to know the best spots to go in California.

The windsurfing population over here is obviously miniscule compared with the US and UK. Why don't our local publisher(s) have a partnership arrangement with one of these other mags and produce an Aussie version of the mag, using all the international articles and advertising and replacing their local items and advertising with items from Aus.

At least they could justify publishing once a month or two, and then we could look out for it on a regular basis instead of just grabbing what is handy.

Too right. Given this day and age of technology you would think articles and magazines could have more of an international focus that extends a lot of its attention into our great backyard.

As for the UK mags, technique can be good, however I find them a bit depressing when they are sailing on some lake in the central midlands or on an indoors arena (great use of initiative though.

I used to see the difference as being a sport is something you compete in and a hobby as anything other. Now I see a sport as anything physically involving, sport includes associated reading etc unless you take to windsurf gear collecting which is undoubtedly a hobby .

The lack of a substantial windsurfing publication in aus has always annoyed me. Freesail was there and in the early days I did enjoy reading it but it is my collection of "Windsurf" magazines that I have kept. The reasons: good technique articles, good gear reviews of a variety of disciplines, good pwa reports and naked... er sorry . Magazines shouldnt become travel brochures either, focus on one per issue at most but for a reason also say a top windsurfing personality sails there and a short associated interview. Also an Australian magazine needs to focus on all of Australia, around when I stopped reading freesail it tended to focus on WA. For those on the Eastern seaboard we may as well read about NZ or New Caledonia as they are just as close if not closer and just as expensive.

Maybe those pissed with the lack of publications could start an online magazine or something to fill the void
