Around about what sail size would a 80kg bloke need to get a Starboard GO129 on the plane in around 12 knots of wind? Also, what sail type would be a good combination eg. Would something along the lines of a Neil Pryde Sabre or Excess be a good choice?
Thanks!

Around 6.0m or so?
The thing is, once you get comfortable with the sail you've got, you then wait for a windier day [}:)]

hi ejmack and nebbian,
i'm not in complete agreeance with a 6m sail to plane in 12 knots.
i think something more like 7.5m would get you planing. you would need to be running a 45cm fin too. if you like neil prydes then maybe a solo would suit better. it is more aimed at freeride sailing and has a better low end. the excess would be ok and the saber is a mod-high wind super-x sail so prob not that appropriate.
but.
if you are only learning then a 6m would be a good start for the light wind days.

nebbian - Cheers. Sorry, I should have mentioned I already have a 6m sail but unless it's blowing 15 knots or more it wont get me up on the plane. I really don't want to wait for it to hit 15-20 knots as I'd like to maximise my time on the water and I really only have weekends for surfing.
Gestalt - thanks. I was thinking a 7m would be fine but after reading your reply and also speaking to a few people yesterday I see I was way off. 7.5 at a minimum seems to be the case. Will look into the Solo. Thanks very much!

Fair enough, sorry for leading you down the garden path a bit, I thought those Go's planed up a bit earlier than that.
Reply was based around a sail you'd want to learn with, rather than a sail that will get you planing at all costs!

nebbian - no problems, I appreciated your input. I'd say I'm at the bottom end of intermediate level, being able to beachstart, waterstart, tack and only just getting the hang of gybing. I'd really like to spend more time on the water.
WINDY MILLER - Yes, the Sabre looks good and I'm also think the V6 would be a good choice also... more research is needed :D Cheers

ejmack i have a GO around 150 ltrs, and i use a 6.5 in 13 knots. my weight is 74 kg so i would immagin it would be around the same sail for you, although you do need to pump it onto the plane

I thought I was outgrowing my GO165 (me 85 kilos) until I tried an 8 meter 2 cam Gaastra GTX. Got to use the supplied 58 cm fin, but with footstraps as far back as they will go and mast forward a bit for marginal breezes it is a completely different board than with a 6.5 dragging it around.

jord070 - I reckon the extra 6 kilos and smaller board would make a fair difference....I think. Although my 6m will get me going in over 15 knots it's really a bit small and I regret buying it. Not sure an extra .5 or a metre would be a big enough increase for my intended use. Apply appreciated!
oldie - Yeah, I think I'll be looking at a 7.5 at least, something along the lines of the NP V6.
The Go's ride really nice once they are up and running. From my understanding the Go129 is very similar to the Starboard Carve, which from what I have heard are a really nice Freeride board. Thanks!

Even if you make do with a 30 cm base extension on a 460 mast (seems OK with a tweak to the bottom batten adjustment) , you probably looking at a longer boom which might deplete the beer kitty considerably.
But you will be sailing instead of drinking :joy:
P.S. Ifyou have a Fiberspar mast NP may not be the best sail. Anybody know about this combination?

At your weight, starborder, you might find that a smaller fin (even as small as 32 cm) will be better when progressing to "footsteering", which is important to protect your 6.5 from destruction as you rocket around.
The smaller base "Tuttle" fins will fit in the Deep Tuttle fin box.
