how many people have used them and how do you think they compare to the boards like
JP radical wave, and starboard acid? are they just as good.

what are the pros and cons of his boards?

I have a SSD fish, and I love it!!!

Pro's = those that have them are usually pretty happy with them, and very cheap for a new board.

Con's = Fibreglass resin finish so you have the usual issues with that. Resale?

Had a Stone Fish board and loved it also
Mark is a great guy with some good ideas and would try to make the board you want. He does a few different types, like fish, evo style and gnarloo boards, but could make to suit you. As far as construction goes I had my fish 2 years and it was still like new and the guy I sold it to loves it as well.
I think at the moment he can make a very light board but still be strong
I used to have an acid, which I really liked but haven't sailed any SSD boards in the similar range. His Evo style boards are really nice.
"King of the Point" has been riding SSD for a while and rips on them

I'm riding a 2005 JP radical wave 69L. Its a truely awesome board. Everyone i've lent my board to has not wanted to give it back. She is lively in the big stuff and planes really early (hardie can back that up). You can still ride a 5.7 on it with a 9" fin and it feels good. I find it has good volume distribution to allow you to get out through heavy whitewash when not planing aswell. This board has improved my sailing heaps especially doin aerials and holding the rail on bigwave epic bottom turns. the more u push the board the better feedback it gives. it likes to be driven off the front foot. I cant wait to see how she goes at gnaraloo! i'll be doin reos over the bubble in no time(i fuskin wish ).

I've heard some bad things about stoneys first boards when he just started makin them, (like a lack of Vee) but i believe he has improved them now.
For their price theyre a good board.

Lots of shops are going to be doin good deals on last years boards soon, so you might be able to get a production board that has better resale value for just a touch more than stoney's sellin his for.

Some of the wood he used (dunno if he still does) in one board, when he dinged it meant he had to remove the whole strip of wood ( might have been long grain balsa) off the bottom coz of all the water it sucked in.
give mark a call and speak to him.
Also lots of guys who do a yearly board upgrade will be doing so when all the new ones come out in a few months. you might find a bargain.

How could you ask " are they just as good "
Any custom from a reputable shaper is better than a production board.

Here's a quote from the Delta web site

"All the sponsored pros are riding custom boards dressed
up like the production boards of their sponsors. I know because
I've built plenty of them !

WHAT A HOAX !

Everyone else has to put up with de tuned, production boards and
wonder why they cant nail that bottom turn. everyday of the week
at margs its plain to see the boards that work and those that don't."

"If you really want to improve your wave sailing then get a custom board
(one thats built for you and not some middle of the road demographic)
and start working on your technique and not mastering a board
that you got off the shelf."

Mark is a reputable shaper and makes awesome boards JP's Star's etc are made for the average person to be used in average conditions. Most of their customers would be living in Europe land.

Pro's

refined, modern up to date responsive shapes.
minimal water absorbtion if damaged in use.
grahics to suit your taste.
shape to suit your size and conditions you sail in.

Bertie the wood he uses is a thin veneer .6mm of wood like in the starboards

I agree with you big flatus how pros ride customs.
This is from the Quatro site quatrowindsurfing.com/locations/wind-waves/
"Kauli finishes in 2nd place at the PWA event on Maui this spring and the moves on to winning the event at Omaezaki Japan in April. This year so far has been unreal, first with Kauli joining the team and then moving into a great representation at the Hawaii Pro this spring on Maui where out of the 64 riders entering the even 33 ride Quatro boards and out of the top 13 riders 9 of them use Quatros."
Makes you wonder who is really designing the boards

yeah i know the pros ride custom boards.. but as i don't know heaps about boards and i am not getting paid by the people who are making my boards i have to rely on the shaper quite a bit.. so i don't want to go to a shaper that doesn't know much and say hey custom boards are good make me a board. and get a big pile of S H I T.

the JP radical wave was a board i liked so i thought i would compare..

you can get ****ty custom boards.

annyway don't stress at the moment it looks like i will be getting a SSD board.

Pro's used to ride relabelled customs. Wave is definately the last discipline to changover, ifca released a waveboard list last year so I think there will start to be alot more production waveboard comps.

That is comp only though, in their own time they might well get some customs made which helps r&d also.

Makes you wonder who is really designing the boards

As per hot sails forums www.hotsailsmaui.net/forum/viewtopic.php?id=702 I'd say master shaper Sean Ordinez is designing all the boards, Polokow and Pritchard have one or two of his boards. www.sosshapes.com/2006/home.html
